Looking to buy a Sapphire and could use some opinions
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-14-12 , 02:31 PM

I find the entire sapphire thing pretty confusing so figured I would ask the pro's about which stone you would suggest and your rationale. I want a very nice stone/ring for my wife so I am willing to pay up a bit.

Wife does not want a round or a oval and wants it to be darker though still have a lot of life to it so the "inky black" would not be something she wants. Prefer quality over size.

Target spend is $15K with a reasonable setting. The last two are over my budget so little harder to go with but seem much nicer but what do I know.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

The more expensive sapphires have several characteristics which drive their rarity, beauty and cost upwards. A very small list would include:

1. Intense blue, (sometimes with a touch of violet), color.
2. Low levels of what is often called "extinction"...basically very dark areas which lack the intense blue color.
3. Flash and sparkle all the way to the center of the stone when looking directly into the stone in medium light intensity environments.
4. Lack of heat treatment to improve the stone's color and clarity. This one is a personal preference, but the lack of heating increases the rarity of the stone and makes it more sought after by collectors and connoisseurs. If heat treatment does not matter to you, then you can save some money by obtaining a stone which is not heat treated.

Here's a stone from Pala International which I can provide within your budget:

This stone is similar in color and size, but is heated and so priced at about 35% less.

Let me know if you have other questions about sapphires and we can discuss them further.

Sapphires are a beautiful semi precious stone and rounds are more inexpensive. The darker and richer the color of the sapphire, the more expensive it will be. Unlike with diamonds, the cut isn't as important, but the size and color intensity are what you should look for.
