HELP! I'm Purchasing a 4.04ct SI1 H ENHANCED CUSHION DIAMOND SOLITAIRE
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 07-07-11 , 12:32 AM

I'm thinking about purchasing this HUGE Enhanced 4.04ct, SI1, color H diamond but I am unsure if I should. It is enhanced which I know means that the carbon may have been lasered out and the color may have been bleached in a sense to give it a whiter look. The person selling has an appraisal for $29750 and claims that it was enhanced using a method called "Fracture Filling". What would be a good price to pay for such a large diamond with it being enhanced? Should I stay away because it's enhanced? From the research I have done it seems it may not be a bad idea, and I'm thinking a fair price would be roughly $10,000.

I look forward to reading your input!

It is important to find out what method of enhancement actually took place. If it was fracture filled and it is a TRUE SI1 H in color you should pay around $12K-15K in this diamond market.

Are you sure it's H colour? The photo doesn't look very white....

Fracture filling does not have anything to do with laser drilling or bleaching. Fracture filling means that surface reaching fractures in the stone have been filled with molten glass in order to hide the fractures. This glass filling does nothing for any potential durability issues caused by any weaknesses in the diamond, it merely masks the way that the diamond would look if it were untreated. the filling can also be degraded by heat from a jewelers torch, should the stone ever need re-tipping with the stone in place. Please have it checked by a competent gemologist prior to committing to the purchased to make sure that the filled fractures are not in a location which could cause a problem during wear.

I am not an expert but wanted to point out that appraisals vs. a grading report should be taken with a grain of salt as they are often self-serving
