The anniversary ring that my wife and I have worked on for several months is finally done. She just declared it a work of art, and seems extremely pleased with the result. I certainly am.

Mark Morrell crafted the fantastic setting. My wife and I were both taken with his substantial but very graceful designs, and knew immediately we wanted him to do this piece. I'm convinced he's one of the top platinum smiths in the country, and he did a great job tolerating both me and my wife being anal-engineer detail nuts.

Jan & Brad provided the wonderful all D color stones. Does anyone realize how hard it is to find "just the right" cut class 1A stones in tough sizes like 0.6x and 1.4x? The sides are VVS1 and VVS2, the center is VS2. Jan & Brad have been fantastic to work with, and contrary to some internet-buyer stereotypes, we've been enthusiastic repeat customers.

And finally, we couldn't have done this without Dave Atlas's help. He did a great job on the appraisals answering all our questions, and acted as go-between with Mark while we established trust.

It's been a real privilege to have worked with some of the best folks in the business.

Here are some photos:

Wow! That is a gorgeous ring!

I agree Mark Morrell has the BEST workmanship. The 3 D color diamonds look fantastic together!

Enjoy.

I love it. Congrats!

How are the side stone’s prongs secured?

Bella, the inner prongs on the side stones I think were notched into the rails then (laser?) welded. We had started out thinking X-prong on this project, but sometimes with more than one stone all those Xs can get a little bit tangled. This idea of Mark's seemed like a clean, unique approach.

Your question about the prongs reminds me of something Mark said that I thought was pretty funny, something to the effect "Some folks want to pay twenty-five dollars to have their diamonds set. Do you know how long it took me to set the stones in this ring...four hours!"

Really amazing attention to detail.

Dogbert,

Congratulations!

That looks A LOT like my e-ring! That's the closest to it I've seen in picture anyway. What size are the side stones compared to the center? I think my side stones are a tad smaller.

Congrats on an absolutely stunning ring. This is my favourite 3 stone setting, out of all those I have ever seen to date. Gorgeous and eye-catching. You will get lots of envious looks with this. And three D-color stones!!! Wow!!

GIA, the center stone-to-side stone diameter ratio is about 4/3 (7.3mm/5.5mm). We thought about using three quarter carat sides at one point, but decided we liked a little more size difference....saved a fair amount of money this way too. Half carat sides also looked good, but this seems "just right".

Yes, my side stones are definitely smaller. I can't believe how much that looks like my ring though! I've seen a zillion pictures of 3 stone RB set in platinum and most of them never even came close to resembling mine. Funny isn't it, how there are SOOO many 3 stone rings are out there, but due to the quality of the diamonds, the proportions of the stones, craftsmanship of the setting, the prongs, the shank etc. the same look can turn out to be soo different. Anyway, congrats again. Absolutely breathtaking!

Isn't Mark Morrell the same guy who did Big Nik's fiance's ring? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the chunky look to this ring (and Big Nik's). It's sooo beautiful!

Congrats!

Yes, Mark did Nik's ring. He and Atalantah and me were all talking with Mark at the same time.

Jess, she's wearing it on her right finger. This was an addition not a replacement .

WOW! Stunning ring. The setting of the diamonds is so sleek. I would love to see it on your wife's hand to get a perspective of the low setting which I love.

Big Nick's Bands
Quote this post and reply to it Post#25 @ 04-14-02 , 12:08 AM

Dogbert,

It looks like we did OK with your project. I am so happy that my work has been well received.

Cal,

You mentioned Big Nick. I didn't want to butt in while this thread was most active but I thought you might like to see Big Nick's bands. I know that B-Nick is awfully busy now and I don't think he'd mind if you saw his wedding rings. At least I hope not.

His band is hand made in platinum. And I mean hand made. All of the stock for his ring was rolled and drawn from my mix of platinum grain and then hand braided and assembled. His ring weighed a troy ounce before the final finishing was done. CAl, you said you like "chunky", didn't you?

Her band was born in a CAD program as was her e-ring - they were made to fit together - and then cast in platinum. For me, it was like a time line of my career. From hand fabrcated beginnings to computer generated, 21st century creation.

Anyway, that's the update. I hope Dogbert doesn't mind my doing this on his thread as he is a DT contemporary of Big Nick's.

Mark
