For those looking for THE definitive guide to gems, check out this awesome new book I just got

Gemstones of the World by Walter Schumann

"It covers everything from the romance and history of more than 1,400 gemstones to their geographic locations, scientific, physical and color properties, and the way they are formed, structured, and mined. With many charts and diagrams, Schumann offers full coverage of the optical features of gems - light and color, luminescence, refraction, and inclusions - and about densities and the chemical elements of each stone, with fascinating details on different cuts, polishing, synthetic and imitation gems, hardness, cleavage, classification, trade names, rarity, and much more - all with an easy-to-understand text. And then there are the magnificent photographs of the stones themselves in brilliant full-color, with full data on the facing page..."

OK let's see who can pass this test

TEST:
1) What is the most desirable color of a ruby?
2)Which stone changes color in artificial light?
3)Yellow is the usual, but pink is the most valuable color of what gem?
4)Square, half Dutch rose, and briolette-to what do these words refer?
5)Where is the world's largest cut diamond?
6)What gem, if worn as an amulet, is said to protect against drunkeness?
7)Which stone was used in rings, cameos, and drinking vessels in Egypt over 3,000 years ago?

Aaack! I'm at school again! Help! LOL! Just kidding. I'm not gonna play, cause I have that book. It is a good book - I even use it at school during gem identification sometimes.

Get rid of question 2. It is not proper, and asked in a misleading way.

What do you mean by "high power?"

If you don't like the questions, talk to the publisher, that's where I got them from!

1) A red known by it's trade-name of "pigeon-blood". Indicates a colour of red with very little pink/violet tones in it
2) Alexandrite? Colour change Sapphire?
3) Diamond?! But I'd say RED is the rarest
4) Gemstone cutting styles
5) Either the British crown jewels or the Thai crown jewels- Cullinan or the Golden Jubilee
6) I have no idea. Aspirin would be a better bet
7) Ruby?!??!

Quick GIA,
how badly did i flunk?

Mercier,

You did pretty good actually You even got question number two right even though it was deemed "improper and misleading"

Anyway, here are the answers. As you can see you did pretty good, I think you deserve another ring for yourself!

1)Pure red with a hint of blue
2)Alexandrite (It is green in day light, light red in artificial light)
3)Topaz
4)Different cuts of gemstone
5)in the sceptre of King Edward VII
6)Amethyst
7)Agate

I wore an amethyst ring for years and it never stopped ME from getting drunk!

I had heard that about amethysts. My ex-boyfriend was a recovering alcoholic and one year for Christmas I got him a big chunk of amethyst--like a geode? Is that the right word?

I guess it didn't work...he went back to drinking and I broke up with him.

Oh well...

wow that's quite a lot of mistakes

GIA :tjat's cuz you didn't BELIEVE
go put that ring on and get sloshed!

i somehow just don't think agate comes under the world of gemstones/jewelry (I know alot of people are going to argue with me on this one) it reminds me too much of kitchen countertops and bathroom tiles.... somehow.-just my 2 cents k?-

Cal, maybe it works like.. if the person gets drunk, take a geode. crack it on his head and he won't get drunk again?

Bad Question #2. There are lots of color changing stones--alex, color changing sapphire, color changing garnet--even color changing diamonds (chameleon diamonds). Probably more. I like color changing stones.

Cassandra,
Might want to try a forum search. There's been pictures before.
