This is a sort of dumb "jewelry marketing 101" question, please bear with me. Let's say a store was selling two different three-stone pendant necklaces: one with three 0.65 carat rounds, the other with three 0.67 carat rounds. "Total carat weight" on the first one (1.95) is just under a weight category for a single stone of that size, whereas the second one (2.01) is just over it.

For six otherwise identical diamonds and settings, it would logically make no sense to me for the two to be priced any differently other than for the weight difference. However, is there some additional "perceived value" for the second one that's over 2 carats when marketing or purchasing these two items?

Bump back up. I know it's a stupid question .

Just to clarify, this isn't a buying situation I'm in or know about (promise) so you don't have to worry about stepping on anyone's toes.

I don't think that bares relevance to the customer who buys a 2ct single stone as a preferrance to the 2ct weight though I think it might have some impact to some.

Not sure what to tell you but as a jeweller I will pay more for a single 2ct stone, then for 3 stones that meet the 2ct range It can only be an issue when 'I source two, say 50pt'ers and a 1ct centre stone, which must inherantly hike up the costs in the same way a 2ct magic fugure can.

Bob,

Nah. That won't make much difference. There may very well be other variables involved that can be pretty important.

The remaining materials, design and workmanship of the piece can be very significant, sometimes as much as the diamonds themselves! Also, there are other attributes of diamonds beyond the weight that can be very important for setting prices. Lastly, the marketplace involved can make a big difference. Otherwise similar pieces have different prices at flea market than they do at the jewelry store.
