I posted a while back another opal ring from this seller... and I must say, he's tempting me very badly into making an opal ring my next jewelry purchase. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAP...&item=703152543 |

I love opals. My favorites in opals, diamonds, pearls! The opal in the ring is very pretty. I love the blues and greens. I do not know if I care for the design of the ring, but if I designed rings like you do, I would want the stone anyway! Good Luck! (and if you see any other opal finds....) |

Lemme post a few that I like by this seller. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&item=703113534 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&item=703120000 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&item=703120038 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&item=703129263 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&item=703132204 [Edited by Cassandra on 03-04-02 at 11:25 PM] |

I think that he figured out how to keep the torch off the opal, Eh? |

Blue Green Opals
Cassandra: I love the colors of those opals! I got to visit Gemtec when I was in Sydney, and was tempted by the hundreds of loose and set opals they had for sale. I don't really care for the milky white opals, but the vivid-colored ones (fire opals, I think?) are awesome! Do you (or anyone) know the safest way to clean an opal set in sterling silver? The silver has turned black, as all my silver rings do. I want to clean the silver but not harm the opal. Any advice? Thanks, CAL |

I like #2 and #4 the best. They’re pretty.

Cal, I'm not sure how to clean Opals... They're gemstones, so I bet they're easier to clean than pearls. I know you're not suppose to stick pearls in jewelery cleaner... says so on the jars. Bella: I really like #2 too. Tantazine looks to be a pretty stone. ![]() The torch off the opal, Ruck? You mean when putting it all together? |

Never use any kind of ammonia cleaner on opals. They have a high water content, and are very fragile. This is why they are usually set into a bezel setting. Especially boulder opals (the colors of which are like the first ring that you posted the Ebay link to). Simply wipe the stone with a damp cloth. If the setting is dirty, try to polish it with the same cloth, but don't soak it in the commercial cleaners you use for your simulants and diamonds. [Edited by diamondangel on 03-05-02 at 10:27 PM] |

... You know... DT is doing horrible things for my gemstone addiction. I think I find a new stone I like practically every week. I'll go check that out, Rockdoc!! ![]() |

Hey... Is this the opal you're talking about? http://www.bovagems.com/eclectic/HT..._COLORHEAV.html |

If I come across any while I'm out gem shopping, I'll be sure to send you an e-mail. They do sound fabulous! What is the hardness of an opal? I know that over time, they eventually crack on you anyway, right? I've been told that before. |
|

Cassandra, My jeweler hates working on opals because of how careful you have to be with them. Like DA said they have a high water content and if you torch them then they do bad things. I think they are like 3 or 4 on the mohs. Rocdoc will know for sure. |

Oooo. Would you please post a picture of it, Rockdoc? I'd love to see it. Actually, I'd love to see any of the ones in your collection! |

Hi Cassandra, Here is some more eye candy for you. ![]()

Oooooo... - I think Diamonds are still my #1 favorite stone, but Opals have just stolen #2 from Sapphires. |

That's okay Rockdoc. I understand.

If I were going to chose an opal piece I would go with that type of opal. It's intense. I never see opals in white gold? Anyone know why? I also hear people say that that opals are bad luck - ooooohhhhh...... what's up with that? |
|
|
That must be the whole food based thing... If it tastes good, spit it out. It must be bad for ya. So... since opals are so pretty... bad luck? I don't consider any stone bad luck. I'm not into Superstitions.

Opals=bad luck
If you aren't born in October, your opal will bring you bad luck. therefore, being a Libra, I will happily relieve you of this burden. ![]() Send all your scary opals to me. I have several wonderful opals: a vintage "floating opal" (about as big as end of my thumb) and a lovely Peruvian opal created by my favorite hippie jeweler, Shano, from CO. It is the color of the Carribean--and changes in the light: it really looks like a turquoise ocean--so cool. I have an opal triplet (vintage). I've always wanted a huge, fiery opal (not a triplet) in that classic diamond surround setting. Opals are fragile---i cracked one of my rings once. ouch. mars mannix |

If Opals are so fragile.... I have an idea for a necklace... Hmmm. |

This Australian site has tempted me with some opal men's rings: http://gilletts.com.au A DT member (I forget who) posted this saying to the effect-Hey Rodentman look at all the pretty rings. And she was right! The Rodentman |

Am I the only one who really loves...
...the white opals? You know, the normal ones? ![]() I love 'em. Here, I'll post a picture of my opal bracelet. Not a good picture, but you get the idea. It was a graduation present from my mother but I rarely wear it. She thinks it's an "everyday" bracelet, but I think it's a "special occasions" bracelet. Then again, with the exception of my engagement ring, I *rarely* wear any jewelry and my expensive jewelry makes it out of the box about twice a year.

There's white opal in that first pendant. I like white opals too, especially if they display pinks/greens/blues. I'm just more partial to all these brighter colors. Mustt be because I'm so pale. I've always prefered the brighter colors. That's a pretty bracelet, Em. ![]() [Edited by Cassandra on 03-06-02 at 02:02 PM] |
