Unfair Charge?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-21-11 , 12:52 AM

Hi there,

I bought my wife's engagement ring from Van Cleef & Arpels and so probably paid more than it is worth but hoped that they would provide quality service.

We have had it 7 years and my wife noticed the stone was loose. I took if back for repairs and they have informed me that it will cost almost
2000 GBP to fix the problems which is around half what I paid.

It is normal that an engagement ring should be so fragile and that the people who made it should charge so much to put it right?

Thanks a lot,
Alex

Is the setting elaborate and what repairs will they be making?

I think the setting is pretty standard. What they said is:

This Vend˘me ring is too damaged to be repaired.
We have to manufacture a new body ring.
Lead time will be 10 weeks upon your approval.

But my wife has not done anything to damage it and doesn't even wear it more than a day per week. The band snapped once before because it was so thin after they re-sized it. Surely a ring they manufactured should stand up better to regular wear and tear?

Can anybody tell me if they think it is reasonable for me to make a fuss about this?

Also does anyone have an idea of how I should go about it?

I don't want my wife to end up without an engagement ring, especially when I paid so much.

I hope someone can advise,
Alex.

Maybe full replacement is VG&A's policy whenever something older comes back for repair; that way they have no liability for the repair. Find a good goldsmith/bench jeweler locally. He/she can tell you what the problem is and whether the given solution is on the mark. Who knows you may find a source to work with.
