I saw an ad for a local retailer boasting of a new cut called cyclone. To me, it looked like an emerald cut, but didn't have the step effect that normal emeralds would have.
Anyone have any ideas on the differences between the two?

Simple. A cyclone cut doesn't exist and a tycoon cut is a branded cut that is somewhat similar to an emerald cut.

"The Tycoon Cut is a departure from the other branded rectangle shapes with a radical top design which is reminiscent of the early French cut. It is marketed as the “only diamond with a diamond on top”. As with all of the branded cuts it is billed as the most brilliant of cuts by its designer Toros Kejejian. It is said to reflect 50% more light than traditional cuts."

Below is a drawing.
By the way, you *may* have gotten 'typhoon' confused with 'tycoon' and then confused 'typhoon' with 'cyclone.' A simple error!

Thanks jon,
Thats the info im looking for. Do you have any resources for french and tycoon cuts?
ps...It was late when I saw the ad and was half asleep. The only reason I noticed it at all was that my girlfriend made a comment that woke me up during the commercial.

Difference???

The difference I was referring to was that of the tycoon versus the emerald. Sorry if I was unclear.

Well, http://www.tycooncut.com is the official website. Since the stone is branded, there will be dealers for this diamond.

You're in New York? The tycooncut website has one listing.

BURKE and BANNAYAN JEWELERS - ROCHESTER, NY
(716) 723-1010

Good luck with the diamond!

Jon,

I hadn't heard of this fancy cut before purchasing the emerald cut that I did. the one nice thing is that my girlfriend made the comment that she cant see the difference between the two. She does not know that the ring will be under the tree on the 25th. Felt a little better at that point since I have already had the ring made and the center stone is an emerald cut. I can't help but chuckle knowing that she doesn't know that I have the ring. She isn't expecting a ring until late next year but keeps trying to drop hints on what she likes. I jusk keep chuckling. The following link is what she will be getting for christmas.

I've seen a few rings with similar designs, but I had to have this one custom made since I could find the exact one I was looking for. The setting is a typical cathedral ring, but I had the jeweler add the sidestones.

That's a beautiful stone very, you must be so excited! Your girlfriend is going to be so impressed that you helped design it. I don't know if I'd be able to contain myself and keep a secret that well!!
I agree, the tycoon and emerald cuts look really similar, they're both gorgeous.

Nice ring. I'm looking at emerald cuts also. Can you share the size and dimensions of your stone? Trying to get a sense of proportions.

BWAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I spewed Dr. Pepper all over my keyboard when I saw that. I'm so disappointed that I didn't think of doing that. Well done, sir.

LOL Juan!!!

I've seen the Tycoon cut and, well, as an emerald lover, I think that criss-cross effect just keeps me from being drawn in deeply to the stone---which is what I like about the EC.

Looks fun

Yes Staci, technically is posible you must to do a CAD design of the cut in DXF format to make a lobe cam by CNC that will be attached to an index head that makes the cut angles and the swirl of the cut and this can be a patented cut by veryexcited.

JDanforth, I am very sorry for your keyboard, now drink water to rinse the keys!
