The Mohs scale of hardness is a range from 1 to 10 that defines (by comparison) the hardness of minerals.

That a mineral is higher on the Mohs scale does not mean that it is x times harder than the previous rating. Imagine you have a 10cm square of glass (about 5.5 on the Mohs scale) and you have a piece of rough quartz (about 7 on the Mohs scale) and you rub the quartz on the glass. The glass will scratch (indicating that the quartz is harder than the glass).

If you took a piece of fluorine or calcite (3-4 Mohs) and tried to scratch the same piece of quartz, you would be unsuccesful.

Your question is somewhat confusing. Diamonds rank 10 on the Mohs scale so what you may be thinking about is that it is largely fragmented and susceptible to breaking (fracturing). If this is the case, your diamond is replete with flaws and could thus be labeled "industrial quality."

I hope this helps some!
