Buying diamonds - risk of not seeing the actual diamond!

Hi all
I'd like to share my experience about making buying decision based on GIA certs.
i have been looking for a diamond for weeks, considered buying online but finally opted for going to a local jeweler where i can see the actual stone. Like many members warned, what it says on the GIA cert doesn't clearly reflect quality of the diamond! The diamond that i bought is a SI. On the cert (check out GIA report 6127249372), there seem to be small cloud and feather near the rim of the diamond. Both my husband and I are no expert so our immediate reaction was 'wow' that looks cleaner than most VS1 diamonds we've seen (on paper)! But when we looked at the diamond under microscope, we understand why it is SI - the cloud was quite apparent!
For me, the cert had been useful reference, especially for shortlisting from a pool of diamonds, but to make the final purchasing decision - I wouldnt recommend doing so without inspecting the actual stone.
