Jeweler Price War - Need help from vendors

First I want to say thank you to everyone , I have learned quite a bit in the last couple weeks.
We have already purchased our diamond and just fell in love with a Ritani setting - 1PCZ3296CRP - it's for a square/princess cut and labeled the "ritani setting". Being the informed and educated shopper the top people on this site made me, I set out to find the best price in our area, as well as trusted online vendors.
I received three quotes for the ring in 18kt with the crown designed to fit my elongated diamond. They were $3150 (local), $2645 (online) and $2600 (online). All assured me this included the custom mounting, etc.
When I spoke with the local shop and asked him to price match the online vendor at $2600, he stated that after he spoke with his Ritani Rep, the online vendor may be losing his ability to sell Ritani for "undercutting" the cost and other vendors.
I understand designers set standards for what they sell their mountings for in the retail market, but is this local shop blowing smoke to get me to pay more, or could this actually be true?
It's a pretty significant difference in price.
