Unusual Ring Situation
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 08-04-09 , 10:24 PM

Hi all! New to the Forums.

My MIL provided me with her aunt's wedding set. She said it is for my daughter and the man she plans to marry if they want to use it. The diamond is a half ct. old fashioned cut, average quality (HI/VS on the appraisal).

How unusual would this be for the girl's family to provide the ring? They would have the diamond reset in a new setting.

It would be quite a savings for them if they used this ring.

Looking for stories and opinions.

Thanks so much!

its a most common factor . its not at all a gift . just like dowry from mother to child. its better to make new ornaments from that old one

I think it is wonderful to pass down Diamonds, adding some history to a new Marriage adds character continuity. Of course you can always have the Ring re-designed using the original gold and even adding some new Diamonds to the mix.

I don't think it is unusual at all, but I would check with your daughter first. If she doesn't want the passed down set, she may feel like she has to wear wedding rings that she doesn't really want. I would also try to approach her pretty openly about it, unless you are sure she feels free enough to give you her honest opinion. I know that I would appreciate a gift like this, but not sure I would want to wear it everyday, and forever...

Especially if the ring has sentimental meaning, the family ring and stone should be fine. One doesn’t have to spend a lot of money to get married and saving on the ring with something of meaning is worth it.

My fiancé’s grandmother went a different route. She took five different family diamond rings, and pooled all the diamonds into one massive setting we call “the chandelier”. It is a massive ring that looks fake as it has 30+ diamonds many of them over 1ct. I had it sized for her and she’ll now be wearing it down the isle on her other ring finger.

Using an heirloom for a wedding can be very nice. Its a great way to keep tradition alive as she can give it to her daughter. By changing the mounting, she can put her own personal touch on it and basically add her flair.
