Is this a reasonable charge to fix a ring?

Ring Specks:
Slight Micropaving on the each side of the mount
4 prongs
14karat gold
3mm wide

I recently had my ring resized from a 6 to a 4. After the resize, there is a crack near the micropaving.

I didn't want to bring it back to the same jeweler because I was afraid he'll do more damage upon fixing it. So I went to a "reputable" jeweler in my area and this is what he quoted:

$35 per dent and he said he saw 5 cracks/dents ($35 x 5)
$12 to reset the diamond back in and to tighten one of the loose diamond
$75 for polishing and replating
Complimentary reshaping

Total Cost: $262

Is this a fair price?

I am just wondering because I could probably get a new mount on e-bay for that price

Thanks!

Yep, it's a fair price. Fixing cracks around micropave is a PITA and I wouldn't have attempted to size it down so much, since that was bound to happen.

Getting a new setting on E-Bay may or may not be such a good idea, since the quality is quite variable. Then you have the problem of having to have stones set in it and who's going to do that ? Most jewelers who have settings brought to them will either refuse to work on them if they are poorly made or they will charge more to set stones than they would have if you'd bought the setting from them. If you find a setting that you like on E-Bay, I'd take the picture and discuss it with your jeweler. They may be able to do the WHOLE project for less than if you bought all the parts and had them put it together. It never hurts to ask !
