Resizing
I have a ring that needs to be sized to 4.25 from 6.5. The ring is a 3 stone emerald cut diamond ring with 3 princess cut diamonds on each side of the band, they are channel set. If the band is cut to resize, pulling the band together at the bottom will more than likely break the channel set diamonds. I am concerned about sizing this ring down to 4.25. Are there retainers that would work or could a ring be soldered inside without breaking the diamonds. If there are retainers, where can I order one. Richard |

Richard, In order to bend the band, pressure has to be applied in such a way that bending this band would definitely mess things up. There are no internal rings that are available as stock items which can be used, since the need for different sizes requires that things be made to fit. The thickness of an internal band required for this size difference is very close to 1mm which would make the band very much thicker than it is. If that's tolerable, then you could have an internal ring soldered in place, making sure to cut clean-out holes in the internal band so that the channel set stones can be cleaned properly. |

I have seen here many questions about resizing and I will give you a general guide but also is very important to know each ring in particular. If the ring or band don't have stones, it can be resized up and down about 3 sizes If the ring or band have stones set, it can be resized 1 size up and down without problems but more than one size down it cause that the setting or grains that hold the stones open and the stones fall or become very loose. If you want to resize up a ring or band with stones the ring must be cut and open and the set stones act like stop and when you try to open the diameter the ring breaks right at the lower part of the shank. For resizing of less than one size up, you can do it without removing the stones in the case of a ring with stones and it is much simpler in a band or ring without stones because this is done with a wood mallet over a mandrel stretching the metal a little bit and precious metals are so maleable that you can do it but the best is to have a ring made to your size. |
