Question about strange setting
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-07-10 , 09:54 PM

I am considering buying this yellow gold and amethyst ring from an antique jewelry store. I think it's very pretty, but the setting seemed strange and maybe even cheap to me. Rather than prongs, the stone is held down by four somewhat wide, flat strips of gold that seem to be "glued" over each side of the stone. Has anyone seen something like this? If so, is it normal, good or bad?

I have a picture of it on my phone, but I'm afraid it's too blurry to help much.

Not a good sign if the setting is glued to the stone. That does sound like a cheap setting job if it is.

Could you post a picture of this or anything else that you see that may be glued ? I've heard of such things, but never actually seen it...it does sound strange !
