Hi all,

Thanks for all the earlier opinions for me to choose my engagement diamond.

I've already made a decision for my purchase. The next step is finding a good appraiser. Is appraiser with CGA or MGA the best choice? Can anyone recommend a reputable appraiser in the Bay Area, California?

Thanks a lot!!!!!!

My exact location is Silicon Valley.(Santa Clara County, California)

I wonder if an appraiser (with CGA/MGA) from a jewelry shop is reliable.

Thanks

A CGA (Certified Gemologist Appraiser) is a title with the AGS (American Gem Society, a retail ethics organization. MGA (Master Gemologist Appraiser) is a title from the ASA (American Society of Appraisers).

The AGS deals primarily with retail jewelry and the ASA is a multi-disciplined appraisal association that deals primarily with appraisal and valuation issues.

I'd say you've got the best of both worlds here. You can check to see if the jeweler is in good standing with both organizations by contacting them. I would also recommend viewing a sample appraisal. It should be easy to understand and contain good descriptions, photos and at least a description to the appraisers methodology of how the value was estimated.

Here is an edited portion of an article stating the parts of an appraisal. I can email you the full version if you need.

Jewelry Appraisals That Don't Backfire on You
By Julie Nash GJG AM and Arthur Skuratowicz GJG NJA
Published in JCK magazine Feb 2000

Appraisal Training (How do I know what constitutes a good appraisal?)

Intended Use (What is the appraisal for?)

Purpose (What type of value is reported in the appraisal?)

Value (What is the dollar amount assigned to the jewelry and how was this amount arrived at?)

Market Level (Where is the jewelry being appraised most commonly bought and sold?)

Method of Valuation (How did the you, the appraiser, come up with the value?)

Dates (When was the jewelry examined and when was a value estimated?)

Limiting Conditions (What were the conditions at the time the jewelry was examined for appraisal?)

Liabilities (What are you responsible for when you write on appraisal?)

Certification (What do you affirm or certify as the truth when acting as an appraiser? What are your appraisal ethics?)

Description (What is the jewelry being appraised?)

Narrative (How was the appraised value arrived at?)

Appendix(s) (What's a VS2 anyway?)

Appraiser Credentials (Who is the appraiser and what qualifies him/her to grade and value jewelry?)

scabiosa it's possible that in my cleaning of email spam I may have erased an email from you, or someone else.

Please email or re-email me so I have a return email to send you the appraisal article. We have written a dozen or more appraisal related articles if you are interested as well.
