Any ideas on taking a picture of a diamond?
Can anyone give any advice on how to take a GREAT picture of a diamond ring? I really want to do the rings justice as I'm selling them online. I have a good Fujifilm 5mp camera that I can take pics with or I have a Canon D30 with a macro lens that I can take pics with. I need advice on how to do this so that I can do the stone on the ring some justice. Thanks! |

Re: Any ideas on taking a picture of a diamond?
Hi hope this can help if you are just taking pictures of rings and small item, get yourself a vinegar bottle the plastic one the biggest you can find. Then cut off the top part turn it over and cut a hole in the bottom of the bottle the size of your camera lense. Put the jewelry on what ever surface you are going to be using place the vinegar bottle over it, put your camera on the hole and zoom in and out until you have it focused. The bottle cuts down on the flash, you can also try putting a piece of tissue over the camera flash, make sure you have a good program for editing pictures. Read up on the different settings on your camera these can help when you are taking close ups. Good luck with the shots and the web site, post some here and let us see how its going. |

Re: Any ideas on taking a picture of a diamond?
Photographing diamonds is tricky. I do it all the time! What surface are you photographing them on? I use an EZ box, which is a box where the bottom and sides light up. I tend to just have the sides light up (not back or bottom), and photograph the diamond that way. If you don't have a special photography box, you can make one very simply out of a cardboard box, and tissue paper. You just cut out big squares on the top and sides of the box, and tape white tissue paper onto the sides, and place a flat colored paper on the bottom. Shine lights on either side of the box, and you should have soft even lighting. As long as you don't light the diamond from behind or underneath, it won't appear dark. Also, experiment with different surfaces to photograph on. Try black leather. It juxtaposes nicely with the light diamond, making it look lighter than it actually is. I notice that around 4 o clock, a diamond gets the most fire from natural direct sunlight. If you can angle your home-made easy box to capture it, I think you'll have some pretty dazzling photos
