Pave and prongs are used for different things, so it's not usually a choice between the two, or an advantage to one over the other. Pave means "paved" as in covering a surface with closely set small diamonds known as melee. These are held in place with beads that are formed from the base surface that is being covered. Contrary to how some people use the term, "pave" does not mean a single or double row of diamonds in a straight band. It means a wider surface or portion of that surface covered with bead set diamonds.

Prong setting is only really done on larger diamonds, although you could prong set a 5 point diamond or pave a larger surface with that same size. Prong setting of center stones is usually done in sizes above 10 points and usually much larger. Typically pave is used as an accent to a larger center stone and so you often see both setting styles in the same ring.

I saw a ring with prong set diamonds on the shank of the ring. I've also seen other rings that were set with prong all over. I just wondered if there was a reason why someone might use prong on the entire design of the ring instead of pave. Your response helped.
