Choosing a Ruby

The most important factor in the value of a ruby is color. The top qualities are as red as you can imagine: a saturated pure spectral hue without any overtones of brown or blue.

The word red is derived from the latin for ruby, ruber, which is derived from similar words in Persian, Hebrew, and Sanskrit. The intensity of color of a fine ruby is like a glowing coal, probably the most intensely colored substance our ancestors ever saw.

It is no wonder they ascribed magical powers to these fires that burned perpetually and never extinguished themselves.

I happen to love rubies. I have been reading a book about rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Apparently almost all are heat treated, much as all emeralds are oiled. The few that are not show a "silk" that a gemologist can see and which help him make the call of whether or not it is heat treated. I am certainly interested in learning more about rubies!

Discoid fractures around included crystals are another way to separate heated from unheated. But the fracture could be formed before the ruby was mined.

Sometimes there are no visible clues and then it gets challenging.

OK, I'll bite since no one else did. What does a gemologist do next if there are no visible clues? What can he tell; what can't he tell; and how? I just mean what can he tell about rubies, not other gemstones.

There are Few major labs that will do testing and investigation. And sometimes they don't come up with a conclusive opinion.
The vast majority of the time it can be detremined but a few cases are not.

Thank you for the url, rockdoc. I didn't know it was there. I have his book on order, though. I went on a buying spree a couple of months back and ordered several of the major books on gems I enjoy. Three books arrived fairly quickly; the one on cultured pearls *just* arrived; and the one on rubies isn't in yet.

I appreciate the information.
