looking for fab marquise setting
I have a really nice Marquise center stone, channel set engagement ring and matching wedding band. I am not too fond of the setting anymore, and need more bling. The stone is fabulous. E color, vvs1, 1.08 carats. I want to reset it. Anyone have any ideas. here are some I found that I like. I will put a pic of my ring first: |

Re: looking for fab marquise setting
The problem with marquise shaped diamonds is that they vary so much in their length to width ratio that they are hard to fit to commercial settings, (since they need to be a very close fit to be safely set). Overnight Mountings has the widest variety of marquise settings that I've found, but they are kind of plain and not what you're looking for. This is something which would probably be best made as a custom piece and I can help you out with that if you'd like. Send me an e-mail along with the dimensions of your diamond and we can put together a computer model and some renderings of something that would suit you perfectly, (no cost, this just sounds interesting). |

Re: looking for fab marquise setting
Sure, incorporating blue sapphires is fairly easy as long as you confine yourself to commercially available shapes and sizes. Using odd shaped small sapphires can be an exercise in frustration, since they are VERY hard to hold onto and cut accurately. When you are thinking about designing a custom piece it often helps to break the ring down into it's different parts and decide what you like about each individual part of the ring. Then combine them and see how it looks, making adjustments as the design progresses until it looks as goos as it can for that combination. Here's a simple checklist: 1. Band. How wide at the bottom, sides and shoulders? Split band, (how many pieces), or single band? diamonds in the band and, if so, how far down the sides? Engraving? 2. Gallery. This is the area on the front and back sides in line with your finger. If the stone sits high enough, this can be quite ornate, have small diamonds or special symbols. How high and how ornate would you like this area? 3. Center area. This area surrounds and holds the stone. You can have a halo, carved floral details, some special shape or just plain prongs. I get the feeling that you'd prefer something ornate and with small diamonds. If this is the case, then you may want to consider if you'd like this to look conservative or something with a bit more flair. Do you have some ideas about this area? You mentioned sapphires, do you have an area in mind for these? Do you want to use the diamonds in your existing bands and if so how large and how many are there? Then there is the matter of cost. You need to think about what you want this cost as there can be a wide variation in costs associated with the size, quality and number of side stones as well as how complex the piece is to make. That about covers the first part of some considerations to make, the next part involves putting it together in a way that suits you. Let me know your thoughts and I'll turn them into some pictures! |

Re: looking for fab marquise setting
thanks for giving me some ideas! let me try to answer your questions. 1. split band I like, with lots of sparkle. If the ring is ornate, I don't need a wedding band. If someone asks if I am married, I can say yes. LOL. 2. not really important? I like high and eye-catching. but underneath, don't really care. 3. love the idea of halo. hate bezel set. this diamond is very sparkly and I want wow factor. love floral carving. love it. 4. blue sapphires as side stones and/or halo. You can see the pic of my existing ring and wedding band at the top. The diamonds are very nice, and yes, it would be nice to use them. but if it can't be done, no biggie. I can always save them for an anniversary band or such. cost between2,000 to 5,000 here are some pics of ones I like: |

Re: looking for fab marquise setting
The first thing needed when making a model like this is to model the center stone. The attached rendering is of an accurate model which I made of the center stone...I was surprised at how deep this stone is as 84% depth is really deep for any diamond. Your ring size is the next piece of info needed, if you don't want to give this info away on a public forum just e-mail me at: The Gem Shoppe and I'll make a coarse model of the metalwork using this diamond model. Using small blue sapphires like that is beautiful, but also pretty expensive, as each stone has to be cut to fit the curvature of the center stone. Some rings, like the one you've shown on the far left are easier as they use commercially available stones. That ring would also be a good way to use the larger stones that are in your existing ring. If you like that design or something similar, that might be a good one model. I just thought that I'd add that the ring you've shown on the far right, using larger sapphires, would also be a bit easier to make as each stone can start as a square commercial stone and then just have it's sides trimmed a bit. The blue sapphires in these styles of rings are almost always synthetics, (even the old ones), because it's much easier to match colors on the synthetics and they've been widely available for almost 100 years. |

Re: looking for fab marquise setting
Excellent questions! I hope that you'd really go for sapphire side-stones. The second pic/ setting is amazing! Can't wait to see the makeover of this precious marquise stone. |
