FH and I will be dancing to "Can't Take my Eyes Off of You." I lobbied for "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights," but he just said NO! As for how we'll dance--probably no better than we do when we dance to it in the living room, but we're going to find a choreographer who (hopefully) can channel our over-zealous turns and dips into something a little more aesthetically pleasing. Or at least something less likely to end with me on my behind on the dance floor.

Hmmm...I think that "At Last" would be too slow for a Waltz, but it might work.... and I think that "It had to be You" would be to fast...

BUT, I am definitely NOT a dance or music expert!

For those that want to hear "At Last"...here it is...I suspect you will recognize it if you don't recognize the name...

PS....Oh Magpie! I LOVE that Dashboard light song...it's hilarious!!!!

Oh also, Lesson101! If you wanted a sweet song to waltz to...you could waltz to "Once upon a dream" from Sleeping Beauty...

http://www.elisabethco.com/onceuponadream.mp3

"I know you....I walked with you once upon a dream...."

Neither of those songs is a waltz. It Had To Be You is a GREAT foxtrot, and I've seen it work very well for several couples' first dance.

At Last is a good song, but difficult to do a ballroom-type dance to. If you are comfortable with doing a slow, sway-to-the-music type of dance, I think it is a nice song. But it is challenging to find the rhythm to dance to in this song.

May I ask why you want to specifically do a waltz for your first dance? Many years ago, a waltz was the traditional first dance, but it is very acceptable today to do a foxtrot or other type of dance that works better with current music. If you love the waltz, go for it, but don't feel that you have to. It is very hard to find contemporary waltz songs...

Here are some waltzes that I know of. There are lots more, but these are at the top of my head:

Open Arms by Journey
Could I Have This Dance For The Rest of My Life? by Ann Murray
Fascination by ?
Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof
Three Times a Lady by The Commodores
Let Me Call You Sweetheart by ?
You Light Up My Life by ?

We danced to "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra. Since we were pressed for time, we bought one of those "wedding dance" videos you see at the end of the bridal magazines and learned the fox trot in a week! (Danceteacher -- we WISHED we had time for real leassons! ) We were a big hit! Our guests thought it was cool that we danced to a faster song and we had a lot of fun doing it. It was so special without being overly sappy.

I agree with not letting the song drag on too long. Our DJ called the rest of the bridal party in to dance with us about 2/3 of the way through the song.

A Moment Like This - Kelly Clarkson, American Idol

Edited to say the name of my first dance song is on the tip of my tongue, but that was nearly 13 years ago...and since I recently turned 40, my memory is suddenly escaping me...

Whew, I finally got it...

My first dance song was "After All" by Cher, from the movie "Chances Are" back in 1989, starring Robert Downey Jr. & Cybill Shepard.

I've always thought THIS Martina McBride song would make a nice wedding song; I've never heard anyone use it, but I'm sure someone has It's called 'There You Are.'

There you are in the early light of day
There you are in the quiet words I pray
I've been blessed by the simple happiness
Of the perfect love we've made

Chorus:
Every time I turn around
When I'm lost and when I'm found
Like an angel standing guard
There you are
Every time I take a breath
And when I forget to breathe
You're watching over me
There you are
When I'm looking for the light
In the middle of the night
Searching for the brightest star
There you are

There you are standing in a crowded room
There you are, the earth and I'm the moon
My desire is to stand by the fire
That burns inside of you

Repeat Chorus

When I'm looking for the light in the middle of the night
Searching for the brightest star
There you are
There you are
There you are

My hubby's and mine was "I Could Not Ask For More", by Sarah Evans. Though two other special ones were "Amazed", by Lonestar and "When I Said I Do", by Lisa and Clint Black.

Me and the boyfriend have picked "At Last" by Etta James but we do have a few others we like and most them have already been mentioned. You just can't go wrong with the classics. Music from my first wedding were all pics from around that time of 1994. Needless to say, not real fond of it now.

The missus loves this song.

My personal choice would be a nice selection from my early years of music listening experience...something from the Bay area...maybe a nice early eighties Metallica riff...

Ha ha, I can see the whole family just struck dumb with disbelief.

BTW, here are the lyrics to that Van Morrison song.
Someone Like You
(Print the Lyrics)

I've been searching a long time
For someone exactly like you
I've been traveling all around the world
Waiting for you to come through
Someone like you
Make it all worth while
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied.
Someone exactly like you

I've been travellin' a hard road
Baby lookin' for someone exactly like you
I've been carryin' my heavy load
Waiting for the light to come shining through
Someone like you
Make it all worth while
Someone like you
Make me satisfied
Someone exactly like you

I've been doin' some soul searching
To find out where you're at
I've been up and down the highway
In all kinds of foreign lands
Someone like you
Make it all worth while
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied
Someone exactly like you

I've been all around the world
Marching to the beat of a different drum
But just lately I have realized
Baby the best is yet to come
Someone like you
Make it all worth while
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied
Someone exactly like you
Someone exactly like you
Someone exactly like you

Best is yet to come
Ohhhhh the best is yet to come
Someone exactly like you

Lesson 101,

It Had To Be You is a classic Foxtrot.

For At Last, I would recommend doing what I call the "Foxy" -- which is a modified foxtrot. Instead of the Foxtrot's slow, slow, quick quick, rhythm, in the "Foxy", all the steps are equal in timing.

It is not a traditional ballroom dance, but the "Foxy" works well for many contemporary slow songs.

We are eloping on March 8th but if I had a big wedding our wedding song/dance would have been to an 80's song

Ah-Ha - "Take On Me" very strange, I know...but we love this song and it would make for an interesting wedding dance LOL

We are thinking of "Back To One" by Brian McKnight. But I do love "At Last", too. My 20 year old son is a Frank Sinatra fan and thinks The Way You Look Tonight is the one we should have. Decisions Decisions Decisions

my choice for a wedding song:

would have to be "can't help falling in love" originally by elvis, but pearl jam brought out a live version on one of their bootleg cd's which is perfect for my boy and i....

i love the line.. "take my hand, take my whole life too.." my mum even suggested walking down the aisle to that song and when that line plays, my father joins our hands....

do you think it's okay to have the same song played twice?

My husband chose "The way you look tonight" for our first dance, and we had "Amazed" sung during the ceremony. (It was an outdoor, lakeside wedding) I love both songs.
