Hi everyone, Is it safe to wear prong style rings when you have a baby or young child? Has anyone actually had any problems or accidents? I'm a bit worried because this evening as I was feeding my son, my mother said to be careful and that it seemed dangerous to have on rings... I never thought about this before! Also, at what age do babies start grabbing for dangling earrings & such? Do I really have to go 'Plain Jane' to be safe now? I'm not really a stud earrings & plain band-minimalist kinda gal but I don't want to be foolish & dangerous.TIA, kayla |

I wouldn't wear big hoop pierced earrings around babies. They grab. I remember when my niece was a baby, and she yanked my hair when I sat next to her in a car. That is hard to forget... I heard stories about children being cut accidently by the edges of diamonds, especially larger marquise stones. Being around babies and small children is 'work' and just as in any job, it's wise to think 'safety first' and be careful about jewelry you choose to wear. |

I'm with Itbit on the big hoop earrings. When my children were babies I just wore stud earrings. I still wore my regular rings.

thanks itbit & u24, so, i'll take the hoops and dangles out of rotation. yikes. i'm gonna look like heck but point taken, itbit - safety first. Come to think of it, I have known two women w/ ripped earlobes from kids yanking them through. my e-ring is small and i'm not sure it would be too risky, but this great wink ring that i just got prjects from the hand a lot more. maybe i'll start lookng at low/flush bezel designs... yeh, if leo gets scratched or injured from a ring I'll never forgive myself. so maybe in this case my mom isn't being paranoid. thanks, kayla |

Remember that there are some great earring styles which will be safe. I often wear 14K white and yellow gold half-round button earrings. They are large, covering the whole earlobe. They look great. |

Prong safety. . .
My three year old still sports a slight scar on his forehead from the prong on my tiffany style pear engagement ring . He was trying to grab one of our sweet Italian Greyhounds; I reached up quickly to stop him and my ring caught his delicate baby skin. I cried, he cried- it was a mess. Soon after I had the stone set in a bezel - not the prettiest look for a pear in my opinion but I was much less lethal with my ring! I hope this helps! Magic

my daughter started grabbing for my hoop earings when she was around 4 months old. she is now almost 15 months old and still grabs at them. i also did scratch her a couple of times with the prongs on my e-ring so now i usually only wear it when we go "out" (which is hardly ever!) |
