My fiance and I are getting married this july in Jamaica. Both of us have always wanted an outside wedding somewhere beautiful. Our families will be attending. We are both catholic and went to my priest to ask if we could get our marriage blessed by the catholic church when we return. Well he thought it was the most ridiculous thing ever and even laughed at us (he is in his 70s). It was awful, I felt like a little girl getting scolded. So he proceeded to try to convince us to have a church wedding ,which we do not want. All we wanted was a simple "blessing" upon our return. This really upsets me, after all, God doesn't care where you get married? However being what it is, our marriage will be recognized every where in the world, EXCEPT the Catholic church. It's funny, gambling used to be a sin and now the catholic churches are running bus trips to the casinos. go figure... |

My families were apalled we weren't married catholic- but we too wanted an outdoor wedding. Catholic priests can't marry outside the church except extenuating circumstances or multi faith marragies. We did get "remarried" at our sons baptism though. The DEacon at the Church had done it but had been reprimanded so event hough my mom worked at the catholic school he couldn't do it. I am not too sure how I feel about Catholicism now- for these types of reasons!!! |

I totally know what you mean. It has caused me to take a look at the Catholic faith. I mean God doesn't care where you take your vows and I certainly don't think He intended for marriage to be like this and churches having all their own rules. I was really appolled and did not like the way the priest made me feel. I had many people saying well why don't you get married in the church and then still go to Jamaica? Well that seems a little stupid, doesn't it!? |

How about get married the you want to in Jamaica and then when you come back home get remarried in the Catholic church. This way everyone is happy.

that is what we wanted to do, go get married and come back and have a simple ceremony, but the catholic church will not do it. that is the whole problem. the only way they will "marry" us is if we sign paperwork to invalidate our marriage from Jamaica. That is a little extreme... |

go to a different church!!!
I bet it is just your priest!!!! They are ALL different!! In one church I used to go to we had two priest, one leaving and then one coming in, they were both there together for a little while. My friend got married by the older priest and she was made to feel HORRIBLE because they had sex before they got married. I got married less than a yr later by the younger priest and he did not make a big deal out of it!! WHY will they do it for someone who joins the faith after they are married?? Another friend of mine got married to a catholic man in another faith. Now she has joined the catholic church and they got remarried in the catholic church. Why is that ok and not ok for you???? |

My husband and I got married in 1982 in a Methodist church. I was Methodist and my husband was Catholic. I converted to Catholicism in 1996 and my husband and I got remarried in the Catholic church at that time, but it didn't null our original marriage date in June 1982. Several members of my RCIA class got remarried at the same time my husband and I did. Talk to a different Priest. |
