Re: How a journalist in the Jewelry industry got scammed on ebay
You know, I have to admit I'm not the most trusting person and I can't believe this doesn't happen ALL the time. There are plenty of crooks just spending their days thinking up ways of stealing, and this provides the best opportunity - I mean really - just say you didn't get it, the package was empty, whatever. It's your word against theirs - no legal leg to stand on. A thief's paradise. |

Re: How a journalist in the Jewelry industry got scammed on ebay
I don't see this as an E-bay problem. I think that the only reason that E-Bay is involved is that they present a bigger target than the real problem. This is a Paypal problem. This lady believed that she would be paid for her item and had every reason to believe that the money would be forthcoming. The fact that Paypal was not diligent in assuring that the buyer had the resources to pay, says something about Paypal. The fact that they then have made resolution of this case so hard for the seller makes them even more suspect from a sellers point of view. I use them a lot, but if this happened to me, I would become very resistant to using them for non-domestic transactions. |

Re: How a journalist in the Jewelry industry got scammed on ebay
Thanks for the link. I sell things on ebay and have been fortunate with most of my transactions. Under ebay's seller preferences you can choose not to allow bidders with a certain amount of negative feedbacks. I find this helpful in editing out some of the suspect buyers. Paypal seems to have made a requirement for signature confirmation on any of the packages I send out. I wonder if it has anything to do with this article? I sure do appreciate how she handled the situation. The line about being a journalist sure would come in handy when speaking on the phone to completely unhelpful individuals who seem to plague us in our hours of need! |

Re: How a journalist in the Jewelry industry got scammed on ebay
i have sold a few items on ebay now. I tell the buyer i will not ship the item until the money is out of my pay pal account and in my checking account. If they have a problem with this then no sell. I've had no problems so far. |
