Hello Everybody!!

I have been here for a while, but I just jumped into some other threads with out introducing myself. As my user name suggests, I am from Indiana and I am a Graduate Gemologist (GIA). I took the classes through distance education and extension classes. I started out because I love diamonds, but I must tell you that after taking the colored stone classes - I really love colored stones. I have started what I hope to be a large collection of colored gem stones. My collection includes: Andalusite, Apatite, Golden Beryl, Morganite, Goshenite, Danburite, Kyanite, etc. I tend to go for stones that are not very well known. I also have a beautiful 216 ct oval smokey quartz. It's a huge stone!! I have been reading all the threads on here and have learned a lot already. I feel like I already know a lot of you. I have posted on the "put a face with the names on DT" thread and the "tattoos of DT" thread. I love the pictures/posts of Cassandra, Musthave, Rodentman, MelissaCT, Lucygoosie (I love the Tattoo, Lucy!!) and many others. I'm glad be a part of DT and I hope you all take me into this wonderful family!!

Hi IndanaGG. Sounds like we share some pretty common interests. I'm hoping to follow in your footsteps some day on the GG. I'm also interested in unusual gems and have been building my collection for a couple of years.

Thanks for the nice welcome!!

Rigel: I will post pictures of my collection soon!! Just today I received new stones from my friend in Bangkok, Thailand. Added to my collection today are: a .43 ct oval Purple Scapolite, a 2.17 ct Em cut Yellow Scapolite, a 1.81 ct Amblygonite, a 0.59 ct pear shaped Blue Amblygonite, a 0.72 ct oval Chrysoberyl, and a beautiful 4.00 ct kite shaped Goshenite.

I would love to hear from more people that are into the "odd" or "lesser known" colored gems.

Hello Scottj - if you have any questions about the GIA program, let me know.

Hello Nicky and msmithmomx2!!

Hey, great hearing from my fellow Hoosiers!! Where are you located Horizon and Jasmyn?

Glad to be a part of the DT world!!

Sincerely,
IndianaGG

Help
Quote this post and reply to it Post#8 @ 02-26-03 , 05:15 PM

OK, to make a long story short... I just quit my sales job at the jewelry store. (I hadn't told anybody this, but it was at a mall store...) I just want to be higher end, and not a "counter salesman". Any of my DT friends have any suggestions?

Horizon and Jasmyn - I'm located in the northern Indianapolis area... Carmel, Noblesville, Fishers, Castleton... Do you know where I can work and do more gemology stuff and less "salesman" stuff? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I guess the bottom line is: I want to be a Gemologist, not a salesman!

Sincerely,
IndianaGG

Post your info in the job classifieds here on DT. It couldn't hurt! Good Luck!

GG Job
Quote this post and reply to it Post#11 @ 03-01-03 , 05:01 AM

Hey IndianaGG! I'm glad you found DT; it's the best resource in the world for anyone who loves diamonds!

As for your GG job, you will have no problem finding a high end position. Simply call some high end stores, let them know your experience with GIA, and they will hire you. You should be offered somewhere around $30,000$40,000 a year, even starting out. No store around me, including the high end stores, has more than one or two GGs on staff MAX, and most stores don't have any (mall stores).

For me, I started working on my GG but stopped for the past several months due to pursuing other diamond avenues, but I called Bellman's, which I was told was high end (their prices are certainly so), and I spoke in person with David Bellman, the owner. Over the phone he told me that the minute I got my GG from GIA, give him a call and he would have a position for me. He knew that I am doing distance education. The job would be grading and appraisals--no sales. It would pay well, around what I quoted you, and that is starting out. In that case, he was just starting a new store location, so that of course helped, but it's not uncommon at all for high end stores to hire a GIA GG on the spot. I know this from speaking with many of them, and it's amazing how respected a GG is. Additionally, if you check out GIA's job database, they always have great jobs available at the salary I mentioned...at this time, nothing is in Indiana. Are you looking to stay in Indiana? My advice would simply be to get to some stores, in person, and present yourself. You will have no problem whatsoever. And one more thing...if you love grading and desire to be the best of the best, consider working at the GIA NY lab; after a couple years there, you'll be a pro grader. My GIA instructor, Sam, is amazing and he's been there...I think 3 years, but maybe it's been 5. Anyway, he came straight from school to working for them and he loves it. Needless to say, he is the best of the best.

Hope this helps. Also, if you want to PM or email me, I probably have some contacts that can help you in your area.
