Can anyone tell me if Singapore Customs will charge duty on a diamond of around US$5,000 - 6,000 bought from an internet retailer in the US and couriered to me in Singapore.

Thanks in advance

You need to contact Singapore Customs and ask about import duties on precious stones. In Australia it is quite a high duty. Here it is based on their assessment of the worth of the stone if there is no docket attached. You can also reject landing the goods and they are returned to the sender if you do not want to pay the tax. You can also reject the goods and redirect them to a third party in the country of origin. I would not rec. that though as I have redirected some which then got "lost" in the system. Of course they were already paid for too. There may also be a luxury items tax. I have heard of people declaring things as costume jewelry or mineral samples before but of course am not promoting that idea. The best way to find out is to ring them and ask. You probably would not even have to identify yourself. You could also search on line to find out about the restrictions in your particular country. Also, not all parcels are inspected.
