Victorian Ring..fake stone...restore? Melt as Scrap?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 08-16-11 , 12:52 PM

Hi to all you jewelry experts! I recently started buying some gold pieces here and there, as investment peices in hopes that gold keeps going up. I do this by purchasing whatever jewelry I can get for scrap or below scrap value. Keeping this in mind, I ended up with a Victorian Mens ring. I was just thinking if I could restore the ring, and maybe end up with something worth more than scrap. I was told the ring is 1870s but it has a more recent, but still old, synthetic stone (ruby). I was told the ring isn't worth much because of the fake stone. DO any of you think I should take the stone out and replace it with a real stone, polish out the scratches, and maybe make some money? I only paid scrap for the ring. I have detailed pictures. Its a 10K ring with a 1.75carat synthetic ruby. If I can post pics I will! thanks!!

Hi! I'm not an expert. I don't think there is much value in 10K gold, so any "value" would be in the desirability of the ring design. A natural stone might make the ring more attractive but it might cost more to upgrade than you'd get back.

Thanks, I don't know if its worth it either. I am going to try to attach a picture or two and maybe it can give you experts a clue on whether it is junk or worth saving. The gold value is only around $125 so you are right about that, not a whole lot. I just can't believe that a gold ring from 1870s could only be worth $125 :-(
