Problems with Ladies Cartier Roadster
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 01-16-10 , 08:01 AM

I was lucky enough to be given a ladies Cartier Roadster gift as a wedding present by my husband four years ago. The battery on the watch recently ran out and I took it the jewellers where it was purchased. I was shocked by the price to replace a battery (£80) but I was even more shocked when I was faced with a bill of £645 to get my watch back in working order. Cartier have told the jewllers that the watch has been damaged by 'atmoshperic moisture' and that the dial is rusty. This came as something as a shock as the watch is supposed to be waterproof to 100m and I don't even wear it in the shower! I am absolutely dismayed at the thought that my wedding gift, that was supposed to become a family heirloom, is useless after 4 years. Both my husband and I thought we were buying the best when we chose a Cartier but it appears not. Has anyone else had this experience?

The 4 years is fair for a battery - Cartier state 2-3 years.

I bought a Tank Francaise a couple of months ago and it stopped working after 3 weeks. After getting little help from a local approved dealer, I contacted Cartier directly and they were excellent. I feared the worst - that I had bought a dud (or worse still, a fake) but they paid the postage, confirmed the authenticity of the watch (or Timepiece as they prefer to call it) and gave it a battery replacement and full overhaul under warranty. The suspicion is that the Boutique where i purchased it had it in their stock for a long time so, although new, it was due for a battery replacement and service.

As for your "atmospheric moisture" problem, this implies that the seal has gone - which it surely shouldn't have within the normal period between purchase and its first service (due after 3 - 4 years). If it has truly never been wet (and it should tolerate that anyway unless the seal is faulty), then even though it is out of warranty (Cartier give 2 years), I would contact one of their Advisors (http://www.cartier.co.uk/#/contact-...call-an-advisor) and explain what has happened. Although their technicians (who have looked at the watch) are top class, they probably don't make customer service decisions about who should carry the burden of the cost of repair!

They will charge for the battery replacement (yes £80 is about right - it's the resealing of the watch that ratchets up the cost) and probably a service (that won't come cheap either ) - as it will be due for one after 4 years but may well be able to come to some sort of arrangement about the damage because it seems to be a fault. This could reduce the cost to you by quite a bit.

I found approved dealers to be polite but unhelpful. Cartier's own advisors are much more willing to take an interest in your concerns - they do customer service rather well.

Many thanks. This is really helpful. The battery was brand new when I bought the watch because, like you, the first Roadster I bought did not work because the battery was dead. The retailers replaced it with a completely new watch when I complained that I did not want a watch that hed been lying in the shop with a dead battery inside for an unknown period of time.

I have not had much luck so far in getting a response from Cartier. The UK service contact I was given by the retailer has not repied. I used the Cartier customer services website contact link and also did not get a reply. I will try the advisors though on the link that you have given me and hopefully will get a response.

Thanks again,

Hazel

Can't you take it to any other authorized watchrepair place! Cariter will definitely charge you an arm and a leg for services like these kinds! There's a lot of shops out there ( reliable ) that will charge you a fraction of what Cartier is charging! Considering that you have a quartz movement!

I didn't get any response from Cartier whatsoever. In the end I asked the retailers to tell Cartier just to replace the battery and return my watch. They warned me that the watch was so rusty inside that it might not work. Well, that was nine months ago and it works perfectly - in fact it hasn't lost or gained a second. I think the £645 repair was a rip-off.

You are quite correct about that! It's like taking your car to a dealership who will charge you 100.00 for an oil change where you can get it elsewhere for the same service for 25.00! But it sounds as if you're watch is due for a service ( required service for high end watches are between 5-7 yrs )! I wouldn't take it to Cartier though and instead take it to some old watchman with 30 yrs experience!
