GIA versus EGL

I’m about to purchase a diamond.

Jeweler A has a diamond with GIA papers
Jeweler B has a diamond with EGL papers (same 4 C’s specs as Jeweler A, lower price)

Jeweler A says stay away from EGL diamonds
Jeweler B says it doesn’t matter, EGL rating is same as GIA

I’m confused.

1. What is the difference between GIA and EGL?
2. How can I be sure I’m comparing apples to apples?
3. Are there any independent web sites that will explain the differences?

I agree with jeweler A. There is a reason the price is lower and more often than not the EGL graded stones are not graded stringently. Heard a jeweler complaining this morning that a stone he purchased with an EGL paper was at least 3 off in clarity and 1 in color.

Buy the diamond not the paper. A paper that is not accurate doesn't mean anything really. Hopefully you are actually looking at the diamonds and not just buying off paper.
