I am having a ring made by Whiteflash and want to get an independant appraisal. I called a local jeweler and he said that they would need to keep the ring for a week. Is this normal? Whiteflash said they could get the appraisal done for me which would make it much more convienient ( they have been awesome-I highly recommend them). Do you guys think that would be enough or should I get it done locally also?

Thanks!

THOUGHTS ON YOUR QUESTION

Good Morning,
( IM SURE WHITEFLASH WOULD BE PERFECTLY FINE)
for THE LOCAL APPRAISAL, I personally, would NEVER leave
a ring for a week under these circumstances. It does NOT take
a week to do an apprasial. IT TAKES ABOUT 30mins to an HOUR..TOPS. Tell them that YOU WILL BE GLAD TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT..WHERE YOU WILL ACTUALLY SIT DOWN AND BE PRESENT IN THE ROOM
WHILE IT IS BEING CONDUCTED. If.. they refuse, polietly tell them YOU WILL NOT ALLOW THEM TO CONDUCT BUSINESS WITH YOU IN THIS MANNER AND YOU WILL TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE. THEN GO ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR APPRASIAL. I would suggest doing this..look in your YELLOW PAGES UNDER jewelery appraisers, or APPRAISERS, you will find an INDEPENDANT PROFESSIONAL who is NATIONALLY CERTIFED JEWLERY APPRASING SPECIALIST, and will ACTUALLY COME TO YOUR LOCATION,HAVE YOU COME TO THEIRS..OR MEET AT SOMEPLACE MUTUALLY ACCECPTABLE..AND THEY WILL CONDUCT THE APPRASIAL IN YOUR PRESENCE. THEY WILL CHARGE YOU IN ONE OF TWO WAYS..EITHER BY THE HOUR, OR BY A PERCENTAGE OF THE FINAL APPRASIAL.. IF YOU WANT A HIGHER APPRASIAL VALUE.. GO WITH THE PERCENTAGE.. IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY ON THE APPRASIAL..PAY BY THE HOUR...
JUST REMEMBER.. YOU CAN ONLY STRETCH AN APPRASIAL VALUE SO MUCH BEFORE IT BECOMES WORTHLESS..THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MAY NOT BE WORTH PAYING THE HIGHER "BY THE PERCENTAGE" PRICE...
ALSO.. THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF APPRASIALS AT THE MOST BASIC LEVEL..
DECIDE BEFORE YOU BEGIN..WHICH ONE YOU WANT THE APPRASIER TO DO...
THEY ARE GENERALLY..
1. CURRENT MARKET VALUE (AVERAGE RETAIL)
2. QUICK SALE= (WHAT ITS REALLY WORTH,AN WHAT YOU COULD REALISTICALLY GET FOR IT SHOULD YOU DECIDE TO SELL IT..THIS WILL BE GREATLY LOWER THAN RETAIL AT THE MALL.)
3. INSURANCE PREPLACEMENT= (SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 1 & 2
4. PRIVATE COLLECTION VALUATION= (FOR MULTIPLE PIECES AS A GROUP)
5. DAMAGE ASSMENT= FOR DETERMINATION
OF COSTS TO EITHER REPLACE OR REPAIR..
(WHAT YOU WOULD GET TO SUBMITT FOR 3 OR TO GAUGE WEATHER ITS WORTH REPAIRING VS. BUYING A NEW ONE)
NO APPRASIAL WILL TAKE MORE THAN ONE HOUR ONCE ITS STARTED. IF YOU WISH TO REIMBURSE THEM A BIT MORE FOR DRIVING TIME OR EXPENSE..THEY WOULD APPRECIATE IT..
this way... your assured of all things for a fair price...
1. YOU GET BACK WHAT YOU LENT..
2. YOU GET A PERSON WHO SPECIALIZES IN THIS SPECIFIC FIELD AND PRIDES THEMSELFS ON DOING A CORRECT JOB..
(UNLIKE THE RING THAT PASSES THRU THE
DOORS OF JUST A "JEWERY STORE AND GETS APPRIAISED BY GOD KNOWS WHO" )
3. YOU GET SOMEONE WHO IS BEING PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THEY
PUT IN WRITING.. NOT JUST A COMPANYS NAME.. IF YOU END UP IN COURT OVER YOUR APPRASIAL OR ITEM.. THE INDIVIUAL STANDS TO LOOSE ALOT MORE THAN A COMPANY..OVER A FALSE OR INCORRECT APPRASIAL...SO THEY TEND TO BE ALOT MORE CAREFULL AND CORRECT IN WHAT THEY SIGN THEIR NAME TOO..

I realize i wrote alot..but this should cover what anyone needs to know about starting to get an apprasial...
an HONEST AND SAFE APPRASIAL when you dont KNOW or have an ESTABLISHED AND TRUSTED RELATIONSHIP WITH A LOCAL JEWELERY BUSINESS

GOOD lUCK, JAMES /MASTER BENCH JEWLER REPAIRMAN

its an enjoyment to help, i can imagine how it must be when
you see all your options as
possible booby traps... its kinda
scary.... its much better when someone
stands at the other end of the tunnel
with a light so you can clearly find
a safe path to your goal...in the
jewlery world..its not safe to wonder about confused or lost... i think
thats why so many good guys are promoting customer education.. the good guys know that an educated customer will recognize at least the
basic levels of quality.. where as
with no help they can get stuck with goods of dubious quality for too hi a price. thats not good for anyone excecpt the bad guys...
glad to help.. any questions ever..just ask..jim

ps.. if you have homeowners insurance.. you might ask them
who could appraise it for you.. alot of times they
will reccomend someone in your area..or even offer to
pay for the apprasial if your going to have it listed on your homeowners inventory sheet.. which is good idea to do..that way..they can weasel out if it gets lost or damaged. you either went to their guy..or their reccomended guy..if they have one.. oh..one other tidbit about apprasials.. THEY ARE ONLY GOOD FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS..
AFTER THAT..THEY ARE SORTA..OUTDATED...AS THE VALUE OF YOUR ITEM HAS SURELY GONE UP.. ALWAYS GET THEM REDONE EVERY FEW YEARS. (IF YOU WEAR THE ITEM EVERY DAY..HAVE IT
CLEANED AND POLISHED AND AND ANY DEFECTS REPAIRED BEFORE ITS APPRAISED, AND DONT WEAR IT TILL ITS APPRAISED)

I would contact one of the appraisal guilds to find an a independent appraiser in you area.
www.appraisers.org ASA (American Society of Appraisers)
www.AGS.org AGS (American Gem Society)
www.isa-appraisers.org ISA (International Society of Appraisers)

Just a note, it is unethical and depending on your state illegal to charge an appraisal fee based on what the value is.

Also there is no benefit to having an inflated appraisal. An insurance appraisal should reflect what the item replaces for. If you over insure with the feeling that you might make a gain if there is a loss, you won't. You may even go to jail for fraud. Unless your policy is a cash policy, many insurance companies will replace the lost item with a similar one. Of course this will depend on tghe competency of the appraiser. If they give you a one page blunder with vague descriptions, no measurements or photo, you are at the mercy of the claim officer.

Another also. Make sure that the appraiser has credentials that are legitimate. Accredited by whom? Certified by whom? I.E GIA does not certify anyone or anything. AGS does certify gemologists and with additional training they certify appraisers. ASA accredits their appraisers and ISA does have a certified title. All of these groups have affiliate or associate memberships. Being an Associate or affiliate member does not constitute appraisal training. It usually means you just paid dues.

Good luck

Make sure they actually have appraisal training. Getting a Graduate Gemologist degree does not constitute appraisal training.
