Gemstone Window Question
If a gemstone has a window problem can it be fixed? If so, how... and how much might it cost. I am asking because by boyfriend purchased a sapphire from Stuller's for an engagement ring for me. I haven't made up my mind to keep the gem or not. I was thinking about getting it appraised. Does it look like it has a window problem to any of you. The dark stone is a picture of how it looked on line...but when it arrived it had more of a purple color. Any and all help is appreciated ![]() The rings specs are the following: Gemstone Specs According to Stuller & GRS Report: Natural Fancy Sapphire Eye Clean Oval faceted Carats: 8.01 (1.60 grams) MM size: 12.52X10.43X6.85 Color: Blue GemWizard Color: 21-5-1 Very Slightly Greenish Blue: Medium: Grayish/brownish) Orgin: Madagascar Depth: 6.85 Make: Very Good Symmetry: Very Good Girdle: Acceptable Florescence: None Polish: Very Good |

Re: Gemstone Window Question
6.85 depth divided by 10.43 width = 65.7% depth percentage You need to look at the stone from the side and see how tall the crown is, but my guess is that it is fairly short. This means that the pavilion is deep and would be easily recut to remove the window and make the stone brighter. I'm not sure from your pictures whether it has a window. Maybe take a picture of the stone while it's being held over a printed page ! The purple color is something which some people like and others find distracting. It is often something which changes under different lighting conditions, so make sure to view the stone under, incandescent and fluorescent lights as well as outdoors in the sun and in the shade. It will probably change color a bit under these various conditions. 8 carats is a big sapphire, sounds like it's stunning. If you see a window, find it distracting and want it removed, you can expect a recut of a stone this size to cost maybe $150 and to remove perhaps .25 to .75 carats. The amount of weight loss depends on how much material is removed and the pattern that the new pavilion is cut to. I would recommend NOT recutting the crown, as doing so would cause the face up size of the stone to become smaller. I just read your first post and wanted to add that you will be hard pressed to find a large sapphire which does not have a window. This is because large sapphire roughs are cut in places which value obtaining the largest carat weight retention from the cutting process. By removing the window they would reduce the weight and since these things are priced by weight, they would be losing money. You, on the other hand, are undoubtedly more concerned about how the stone looks and so a lower weight would not mean much if the stone looked brighter and sparkled more. Recutting is really the only option and you can either buy a stone and have it recut or contact a gemcutter who has already done this. With a stone of this size there are not too many cutters who would be willing to make the investment to do this, so you are best served by making the commitment to a particular stone and then having it recut by someone who is careful and competent. |
