Dear fellow DT member,

Please let me introduce myself.

My name is Ken Frost, aged 40, I currently live in London. I enjoy cooking, eating, socialising and current events. I have been told that I can be quite “direct”, and have a good sense of humour.

Here is a “brief” potted history of my career path; which inevitably has affected my life path.

 I was born in London.

 I studied Economics and Accounting at Edinburgh University (1980-84) great fun, lovely city!; I even managed to gain an MA despite the distractions!

 I then joined KPMG London (1984-1989), and qualified as a chartered accountant; hard work!

 I joined Philips Electronics UK (1989) as an Internal Audit Manager; travelling to all parts of the UK and Ireland, visiting factories, sales organisations etc and meeting a very broad cross section of people.

 In the mid 90’s my work took a more international flavour, and I spent time in such places as Simi Valley, Salt Lake City, Darmstadt, Best, Eindhoven and Seoul. Great fun (can an internal auditor have fun?) and most definitely life enhancing; I even popped up to the DMZ in Korea and stared at the North Koreans, as they stared back at me.

 In 1996 I moved to Stockholm (wonderful city); to set up the Philips Nordic audit department. This gave me the opportunity to regularly travel, at the company’s expense (why pay for something yourself when you can get someone else to; always better value that way!), to; Norway, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Life enhancing experiences which I will not forget. During this time I met my partner (Eva).

 We moved to London in 2000, and I joined De Beers as Head of Audit (can you see a pattern forming here?) to set up their new department. Yet more travel, at other peoples’ expense, this time to Namibia, South Africa (I went down a diamond mine there), Russia and Switzerland.

 I left De Beers in 2001, and decided that the time was right to try my hand at writing. I have always enjoyed cooking (I started testing my “skills” in the kitchen when I was 7); and decided to compile a selection of my favourite recipes (approx 120), coupled with a travelogue of the places I have visited and experiences I have enjoyed (eg quaffing whisky with a colleague at 2:00AM under the stars in a game reserve near Windhoek; whilst the lions, and other assorted wildlife, roared and grunted in the background).

The manuscript is complete; I am now faced with the more onerous task of finding a publisher who can then be convinced that I can write, and that people would be interested in reading what I have written.

I have also designed, built and am running a website http://www.kenfrost.com “The Living Brand”(please pay a visit). This is a living interactive website that, in conjunction with forthcoming books, aims to stimulate the intellectual and gastric juices; as well as to entertain. The site contains a number of sections, including:

 Accountants Can Cook (my manuscript in PDF format).

 Restaurant reviews.

 “In Your Face” topical opinions on issues of the day, including business and politics.

 “Frost Bites” samples of my recipes, guest recipes, cooking terminology and an on line shop selling gourmet products.

 “Worse Than Worthless” my personal award to companies, and organisations, that are “Worse Than Worthless”.

 “The Mall” an on line shopping mall where you can buy products and services from over 130 different organisations including; airline tickets, fashion, furnishings, credit, computers, music, groceries and entertainment.

 “The Endowment Diary” charting my progress (or lack of progress) in claiming redress for the endowment policies mis-selling scandal of the eighties.

 “The Emporium” my personal on line shop, where you can buy into the KenFrost.com brand.

 An interactive chat room and message board.

In addition to “Accountants Can Cook”, I have a number of other titles planned for the future; which will cover the following areas:

 Swedish cuisine.

 Restaurant reviews.

 The creation, and management, of a world class internal audit department.

 My experiences of fraud and fraud detection.

 A light hearted diary covering one year of my working life in Philips.

FYI the skill sets and experience I offer, which may be of interest to you, include:

 Over 20 years international experience (Europe, USA, Asia and Africa) within De Beers, Philips and KPMG.

 Management and leadership skills, eg the successful establishment and development of the Philips Forensic Investigation Department, the Philips Nordic Audit Department and the De Beers Audit Department.

 Performing and managing professional independent reviews that identify risks/control gaps providing recommendations for both the mitigation of these risks/control gaps, and general improvement of the business.

 In depth experience of working with a variety of IT packages from pre to post implementation stages including; SAP, Triton, MFG Pro, Scala and Sage.

 In depth international exposure to a variety of manufacturing, commercial, construction and administrative/back office organisations during my years in De Beers, Philips and KPMG.

 Constant exposure (through monitoring, mentoring and advising) to organisational change eg; restructuring, cost cutting, centralisation of back office functions, introduction of the Euro, IT changes, centralisation of warehousing and corporate delisting.

 High level interpersonal skills, coupled with the ability to interact with people at all functional levels from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

 Experience, and detailed knowledge, of best practice with respect to corporate codes of conduct via:

- Membership of the Philips General Business Principles Committee

- Developing the Philips General Business Principles casebook

- Custodianship and maintenance of the Philips General Business Principles Database

- Aiding and advising on the development of the De Beers Code of Conduct.

 Forensic experience arising from:

- Personal involvement in fraud investigations in De Beers and Philips

- Establishing and developing the role of the Philips Forensic Audit Co-ordinator

- Custodianship and maintenance of the Philips Fraud Database.

 Experience of designing and setting up a website.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Every success to you all for 2003, and beyond.

Ken

welcome kenfrost,
Wow! That's a lot of stuff to have done by 40. You really need to write more about your experience with DeBeers. I'm particularly interested in your comments regarding their "code of conduct" and the fraud investigation that you mentioned. They are so shrouded in a sort of mystique that it's hard to get a handle on what their internal atitudes and politics are really like.

wow.
yeah, we want to hear all the insider's gossip about DeBeers. Isn't there some juicy Illuminati/Freemason plot you can tell us about?

Seriously, it sound as if you've had an astound life so far. I'd encourage you to check out MENSA--www.mensa.org.

Since you are an accountant, you should also check out www.theonion.com and go to the Opinion section, and click on "Herbert Kornfeldt". If you know anything about hip-hop culture, this will crack you up!

Welcome--and please, we wanna hear juicy stories!

Thanks for your words of welcome.

I'm going to disappoint some of you; I will not be posting comments about De Beers.

Susi, you asked me if I liked diamonds; they are one of nature's wonders.

However, like many things that are beautiful/wonderful they can cause pain and pleasure.

Thanks for the welcome Beth, glad you are enjoying Accountants Can Cook.

You ask about my agenda?, well I am trying to build networks across the world of people who may find my site/writing interesting.

I am happy to "chew the fat" about issues (business/politics/etc) of the day, and make general conversation.

If that is not entirley in keeping with the spirit of this BB, please let me know; and I will bow out.

Ken,
Please don't even consider bowing out. Your experience and ability are a welcome addition here.
I really didn't expect you to make ANY comment about De Beers. Sort of like commenting about working for the CIA, I imagine.
Anyway, an accountant who can cook AND has a sense of humor is certainly welcome anywhere. I'm looking forward to your posts.

Thanks, I am delighted to join the team.

By the way Michael, your analogy is not too far off the mark!

May I ask for some technical input?

I see that you are able to put your photos on your messages, under your names.

Please can you tell me how you have done this?

I have tried to do it in the edit profile box (signature part), but all I get is the url of my image posted at the bottom of my message.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Hi Ken,
Under "Edit preferences", at the bottom of the page you can access the page to place a custom avatar under your name. I'd be careful with your picture though...you'll be driving all of the ladies here quite mad with desire.

Thanks Michael,

I think the ladies may have to wait for the picture (it seems my head is too big for the system!). I will shrink myself accordingly.

In the meantime I have tried to add my signature at the bottom (eg Beth uses one), with img between the square brackets, but all that happens is that the link shows up.

I have switched on the pref for showing images, yet it does not seem to work.

Sorry, seem to be having a "thick day" today.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong here?

Thanks

Welcome to DT

The reason Beth is able to post an image and you are having a problem is that Beth is using a "smilie" within the system. Outside linked images are disabled (within signatures) due to a problem in the past where someone unknowingly had a very wide image and everytime he participated in a thread it messed up the layout of the page.

Mike,

In an your earlier post you mentioned an interest in codes of conduct and ethics (see above).

I wrote an article a while ago on the subject.

If you are interested in reading it you can access it via http://www.kenfrostinyourfaceind ex.blogspot.com

Simply click on the article entitled Codes of Conduct.

Hey Kenfrost,

Heres a couple for ya...

How do you drive an accountant completely insane?
Tie him to a chair, stand in front of him and fold up a roadmap the
wrong way.

What's an auditor?
Someone who arrives after the battle and bayonets all the wounded.

Why did the auditor cross the road?
Because he looked in the file and that's what they did last year.

What's an extroverted accountant?
One who looks at your shoes while he's talking to you instead of his
own.

An accountant is having a hard time sleeping and goes to see his doctor.
"Doctor, I just can't get to sleep at night." "Have you tried counting
sheep?" "That's the problem - I make a mistake and then spend three
hours trying to find it"

An architect, an artist and an accountant were discussing whether it was
better to spend time with the wife or a mistress. The architect said he
enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring
relationship The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because
of the passion and mystery he found there. The accountant said, "I like
both." "Both?" The accountant replied "Yes. If you have a wife and a
mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other
woman, and you can go to the office and get some work done."

To the optimist, the glass is half full
To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.
To the accountant, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Two accountancy students were walking across campus when one said,
"Where did you get such a great bike?" The second accountant replied,
"Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a
beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground,
took off all her clothes and said,"Take what you want." The first
accountant nodded approvingly, "Good choice; the clothes probably
wouldn't fit."

Okay the razzing is over now
but I have more where those came from!

Anyway, welcome to DT.

Thanks Gilbert, if you are passing through London I'll buy you a pint!

Beth,

Here's one for you...

There is a pint glass, it contains half a pint of milk.

The optimistic manager says that it is half full.

The pessimistic manager says that it is half empty.

The internal auditor syas that the milk is sour.
