Thanks for the information on emeralds
Quote this post and reply to it Post#151 @ 07-31-01 , 03:28 PM

Empresseva, I knew it was difficult to find good quality emeralds (wuthout the murky inclusions) but I didn't realize they were that fragile. I'm thinking about what my 15th anniversary ring is going to be (3 years away) and that nixes an emerald/diamond band; I want to be able to wear it for everyday.

OK good it worked.
I would want something similar to this in a diamond (but if the centerstone WAS a diamond I would want the sidestones separated via bezels or something)...so this would make a good temporary engagement ring...one that I wouldn't be in a hurry to replace!

but what happened to wanting a 1.75-2.0 carat diamond?

how about this one, you can switch the sapphire to a diamond later down the road.

Suching, read the above replies to see why I might go with a colored stone...
And when I convert to diamond, it will be 1.0 carat H&A.

Anyway...
See how in this example, the side stones are "separated" from the center sotne? This way, with diamonds as side stones, the diamonds don't "blur" together.

Does this make sense?

Another example of separated side stones to avoid "blurring."

Pretty rings, girls! I like the round-cut one a little more, as I'm partial to rounds over ovals.

MELISSACT: Something you're saying is bothering me. Maybe I'm over-analyzing you, I don't know.

I get the impression you have your heart set on a DIAMOND engagement ring. If you receive anything other than a diamond ring, you consider that a "temporary" ring that you will replace later.

I know you've received a lot of ideas to compromise. However, there's a difference between compromising and settling. Do you feel you're compromising or settling? I get the feeling you're settling, which I think is sad.

To me, compromising is finding a solution that both people would be happy with. Neither side feels like they're settling. It's a win-win situation.

In your case, I don't sense a win-win situation. I get the vibe (and I could be wrong here) that you're settling.

If you feel like you're settling, we need to come up with other solutions. We can't have a win-lose situation. That's not good.

Agree 100%...I haven't liked some of the "vibes" in this thread from the very beginning, but let me point out that I've seen Melissa go from wanting a "larger stone" early on down to sounding happy with a 1 carat h&a just now. I think I'm seeing the beginnings of compromise , as well as the potential cost possibly coming down from the stratosphere to something her boyfriend might also feel good about.

For some reason I seem to be like the only person on earth who doesn't like bezels. Oh well

For green stones, check out tourmalines and tsavorite garnets. I've got a pair of tourmaline earrings and the green is so clear and sparkly--love them much more than the small emerald I got as a teenager.

how about an engagement ring with .5 cts of each of your birthstones (1 ct total) with the diamond bought after x number of years or at birth of first child....personally as far a colored stones go i would pick a sapphire in a nice clear dark blue----so easy to match with other things...

Suching, I love that sapphire ring. However, I wouldn't want it as a diamond ring because it would have to translate as an oval.

Melissa, the other rings are pretty nice as well. Let us know what you end up with.

Kgirl--
Cool idea! Two exceptions though--if you're a May baby you're right back to diamonds, and if you're a June baby like me, a .50 carat Alexandrite is significantly more expensive than a diamond in the first place, and a pearl (the other option for June babies) would look strange next to other gems I think.

Joker--I think you have something there!!

For the record, Shel, I don't like bezels either.

I do however, LOVE tsavorite garnets!

The only thing I like with bezels is earrings...this way your hair doesn't get caught on them.

Temporary Ring
Quote this post and reply to it Post#167 @ 08-03-01 , 07:15 PM

Hi there everyone
Yes, if I had a colored stone engagement ring it would be temporary...meaning I would have it for a long time, but not forever.
If I get a diamond instead, that too would be temporary, for it wouldn't be a one carat H&A right off the bat...those are still very expensive.

To all of you who are wondering where this will end, you may be waiting a while...I'm not getting engaged any time soon. I'd like to be done with college (1 yr left) before I get engaged, plus we have to see how things work out!

I have to make dinner and I didn't make it to the computer *EVEN TO CHECK E-MAIL!!!* until around 7 pm!!!!

End of strings camp. Trip to swim at a lake. Etc.

I don't like bezels and I love dogs. I *do* however like certain *half* bezels when custom made and more open. I like only yellow gold half bezels, though. I like to *KNOW* where my diamond ends and the metal begins! Give me platinum only with tapering prongs, please!

I know you don't believe it, but I *will* post a picture of my jewelry (including my half bezel pendant) once I master the digital camera. I'm *HALF WAY* there: I can work the video part of the camera now

Well, I can no longer take any pleasure in discussing this matter, because my boyfriend has told me frankly that he does not care to discuss this any further.
He knows what I want, and says we don't have to keep talking about it.

So it would be silly for me to keep discussing it with you guys!

It sounds like your man is frustrated by you talking about your "future engagement ring" all the time.

Give it a break, and stop worrying about it. Leave the worrying to him...he knows what you want end of story.

I had a friend who talked about getting engaged all the time, and talked about her future ring so much, that her man couldn't handle it anymore, and left her.
a sad case, but there are guys who don't want to talk about it, they'll just "do it" when the time comes.

My final thoughts
Quote this post and reply to it Post#172 @ 08-03-01 , 09:28 PM

Yes, I think he is one of those guys.

So I will get what I get. Someday.

And since in the past I have changed my mind so many times according to what kind of setting I want, it truly shows that I don't know what I want!

So...

I have a feeling that I will be happy with it, because it will come from him.

MelissaCT,

Don't compromise!!!!!!!!! Get the diamond that you want now. If you don't you'll regret it later. There is only one draw back... I do get a little tired of other women going nuts over my wife's engagement ring, and hearing the endless comments about how beautiful her diamond is.

Well I think what my boyfriend has in mind is that he wants to do it right the first time, the only time. He is just sick of hearing about it. In his eyes, we've discussed it, and it no longer needs to be discussed.
