Why does gemstone prices vary so much?
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 05-26-08 , 10:52 PM

Hi there.

Im new here, so i dont really understand things around...

and im really puzzled by how the prices can vary for a similar gem.

for eg. at here and here .

The prices can vary from $50/ct to $200/ct for very similar gems, eg similar pink shade, vvs grade (spinels are never treated). or is there more to it than i can see? (lets discuss solitaires and not loose chips atm)

or does it means that those low priced are not as well cut as the high priced? (assuming you get how much you paid for)

Based on your two examples, I would say the color and the cut of the stone made the difference. There are many subtle differences that are sometimes hard to tell by computer pictures only. For instance here is a gorgeous .85 ct. from our site for $468.

ooo, thanks for the heads up.

so lets say the 2 gems are cut from the same rough (not likely but lets say), I could say that how well the stone is cut makes the price. is that right?

thus, if i buy something more expensive, i should get a better cut gem right? (assuming im buying from a legitamate site, and i know nothing beats holding the stone in you hands and comparing them, but the sad case is that spinel is rare in my country. as this site said, "they cannot market what they cannot get their hands on")

btw im looking for a purple spinel... of around .5-.8 carats... that translates to like 5-6mm round cut right?

I would highly doubt those two stones were cut from the same rough based on the color differences. But yes a better cut gemstone makes a huge difference.

I have a gorgeous purple spinel but it is 4.87 cts. I'll check and see if we have any round ones available.

Hello,
As per my experience, the price of 2 gemstones of the same variety, color and carat weight can vary because of many other factors, other than the cut.
Actually, a very good cut should not cost much more than an average cut. I do not consider in my opinion a badly cut stone.

- where the stones were bought (at origin, or from a dealer, who bough them at origin and exported them, or from a dealer, who bought them form another dealer, after being exported). The more a stone changes hands, the highere the price.

- How the stones were bought. Usually if you buy in parcels,, the average cost per stone is lower, so you can pass the savings and sell them at more competitive prices.

- From who you bought the stones. Even at origin, some cutters/dealers are known to be more competitive than others. Some are known for being very expensive.

-When you bought the stone. Certain time of the year, stones at the origin are less plentiful (rainy season), so expect to pay more.
Or when availability is scarce (again because of season or because no finds in the ground).

-Overheads of sellers. If a seller has huge overheads, prices will be much higher.

and some other, technical factors too.
