While on operation overseas, a section (8 men) of soldiers was patrolling a destroyed village in the area of Bihac, Bosnia in the early nineties.

The section commander had no translator, as the war had just ended (and combat was still being fought in small skirmishes). Well, the section met up with a local resident who had come out of hiding upon seeing these peacekeepers.

This was fairly common, and the resident began speaking to the patrol. Unfortunately, no one was fluent in Bosniac/Croatian, so the patrol commander was unable to understand anything. Finally, getting impatient, the Sgt tried a little German he had picked up while stationed in Lar, Germany in the eighties.

The resident's eyes lit up, and she started speaking very excited German, so much so, that the Sgt could not understand enough to make sense of it. In desperation, he turned to his soldiers and asked "does anyone speak German". At this, a young private put up his hand, nodded yes, and came forward. He immediately spoke to the resident and said "Das you speaken zee eenglish? Ve are Canadian peezekeepas".

He didn't actually speak German at all, but simply spoke English with a very heavy and horrible German accent!

It was unbelievably embarassing and funny, and the section commander could not believe how silly the soldier had been. It was just one of those inane moments in war where people get so caught up in trying to help, they do ridiculous things.

It is a story the Sgt and I still share from time to time and it still cracks me up. Just the thought of everyone thinking that this Private would be able to translate everything, only to have their hopes dashed when he started speaking English with a crazy accent, makes me smile.

Sorry if this is hard to get, but it just reminded me of the story, and I love to share it. It sounds better if you picture the guy actually speaking the lines in English/German. But anyway, thanks for the reminding me. It made my day.
