Loose diamonds on a Channel set band...is this normal??
Quote this post and reply to it Post#1 @ 12-20-05 , 06:03 PM

Hello diamond experts,

I need your advice! I own two channel set diamond eternity bands, and have worn them for past 5 years. During that time, a stone or two in my channel band have come loose, then fallen out maybe 2-3 times. My jewler has been kind enough to fix them for me, but this seems to be happening more and more often, and i'm wondering if this is normal. I am very gentle with my rings, I don't wear them AT ALL around the house and only wear them when I am out and take them off the minute I get home. What is the deal?? These are small stones (maybe .28-.3 each). Is there anything I can do or say to my jewler to keep this from happening??

I appreciate your feedback.

diamondluvr... I had a round/baguette eternity set in a bar setting that had problems like that. So after frustration and fear of loosing a stone, I had my jeweler remake it into a channel setting. He had to go a bit thicker than I wanted to (3 mm) but even he had to make the cast a few times. It took a few months, and so far so good... But deep down I'm worried that I'll get loose ones like you... I do the same thing as you do! I take my rings off FIRST THING when I get home, I am VERY careful w/ them. I don't sleep w/ my ring on because of fear of loosing a stone!

Snooper - i love your bands and how they alternate between rounds & baguette. Mine is very very similar, except for the baguette stones. I haven't called my jewler yet, since i know he's probably buried w/ the holiday stuff, but it really irks me that this has happened a few times. I just don't konw what else to do (other than to get new rings altogether) to avoid this from happening again... >:O

interesting point, diamondsbylauren...maybe that is the issue?? just by looking though, through only a layman's eyes, they all look pretty darn uniform. here is a shot of the band with my e-ring. any thoughts?

Thanks guys I like my band too I'm certain DBL is right, the diamonds must be exactly the same size, because a little too small/big, it won't fit right. That was the problem w/ mine. Mainly the baguette stones. My jeweler had thought he had it right, then last minute, he changed it and was back to the drawing board.. He had a tought time working w/ the baguettes...

Diamondluvr, such a pretty ensemble! I hope others chime in on this issue, because there seems to be a lot of DTer's who have been having loose stones lately.

Curious, how are the stones in your ER set? Can't tell from the pic, but are they a shared prong? I really like the setting on both ER/WR!

It's frustrating I know. I wrote in another post that when I had my band set in a bar setting, I had a loose stone and I took such good care of my ring

Hi Snooper - the stones in my engagement ring is micro pave (it's hard to see since the picture is taken from far away) and the wedding band is channel set, a look that's completely different but somehow work together when I wear them. My ER has a more of a delicate look vs. the channel band, which is pretty common, in my opinion. The good news is that i own two identical channel eternity bands, so i can always wear the other while the one is being reset...but it's just a pain and i want to permanently figure out a solution to the problem vs. putting a band aid on it.

Hi Diamondlovr, it's possible that your setting is losing its rigidness. You may want to consider a new ring setting.
