Demantoid Garnet
Has anyone here ever had or seen these stones. I'm looking into maybe purchasing some for a ring. I've read they have brilliance like diamond, but i've never seen them before. THanks for any feedback. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
From what I understand it's hard to find a nice one since they are kind of rare. Have you checked out any of the gemstone sites yet? Some that come to mind are Cherrypicked.com, ajsgems.com, precisiongem.com, customgemstones.com, acstones.com. You could also contact some of the network jewelers here since some of them have gems too. Michael. E cuts stones. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
I have one in a ring. They're not well suited for rings because they are on the soft side (6.5 on Mohs). The African (Namibian) material goes an ugly olive in incandescent light, but some of it is very pretty. The best material comes from Russia and is much more expensive, beware of some ugly olive stones from Russia though. My stone is Russian, and it looks like a green diamond. It was cut in St. Petersberg and it is a round brilliant. It is a lighter green, where the more chrome green ones are the most prized and valued. The Russian demantoids contain fibrous inclusions called "horsetail" inclusions. This indicates they are Russian stones, so they are more prized if your has a horsetail inclusion, as long as the inclusions do not inerfere with the brilliance of the stone. Palagems probably has the best selection of Russian demantoids right now, as they are very rare and hard to come by. Also don't expect a large one. Any stone over a carat in size is rare and expensive. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
Here's a picture of various sizes and colors of Russian demantoids. The more chrome green (like the color of a fine tsavorite), the more expensive. My stone looks like the bright little lime green one in the front. It's cut off, but you can see the color. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
Demantoid garnet have very wispy and pronounced inclusions that look like fine hairs. They are called inclusions, horsetail, and even their price are higher compared to others because they are beautiful as well as unusual. |

Actually horsetails are usually microscopic. They are priced higher because it has ment they are Russian origin, although they are now finding horsetails in other locals as well. |

That photo is taken with at least 30x magnification, and most demantoids do not have horsetails like that. That is textbook horsetail. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
Garnet has been popular gemstone for centuries because of its good hardness and great glory. There is also a clear garnet color purity because it is a very small number of single refractive gemstones.Demantoid garnet has a higher refractive index than sapphire and ruby.Demantoid also has remarkable dispersion or fire that even exceeds that of diamond. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
Weigh the stone. Demantoid garnets tend to be quite small, and usually weigh less than 2 carats after cutting. In fact, anything even close to 1 carat is extremely valuable. A large gemstone is very unlikely to be a true demantoid garnet, but may be either a clever fake or a more common verdelite garnet. |

Re: Demantoid Garnet
Most Demantoids don't have a horsetail. Its an inclusion which might be interessting from a gemological perspective but it doesn't contribute to the beauty of a demantoid. On the contrary its makes the demantoid look hazy and kills the fire (and the high dispersion makes the demantoid unique) The horsetail is actually a marketing scheme to sell an old stock of inferior russian stones at a premium. It remains me of colombian emeralds with an outrageous price tag due to a ''jardine'' As a guideline: the cleaner the better (as with any other gem) The stones from pala are allright, tough mostly heated. I usually buy in Tucson from these guys: www.demantoid.co They have the best whats nowadys available on the market. I have seen some nice stones out of Iran and Mada but these sources seems to be depleted aswell |
