The Elusive Vintage Asscher Cut Diamond
I get quite a few questions relating to Asscher cuts and it isn't very often that I run into an actual vintage Asscher cut diamond (this happens to be the largest that I've seen) so I thought you might enjoy a view or two: ![]() First thing to notice is that while the diamond is reasonably square, it is most definately Octogonal in shape overall. The modern Asscher which you will run into with much more frequency is a Square shape diamond with much smaller corners. ![]() Next notice the massive Crown on this stone. This is a hallmark of the vintage Asscher. The large Crown adds a nice dimension of Fire to the step cut Brilliance of the diamond. ![]() This last shot doesn't show much about the diamond but the ring is a custom piece based on a cathedral mounting with a unique basket and prongs with intricate Pave diamonds. All in all a rare and drop dead gorgeous piece. Best to All, Ariel Friedman |

Ariel...thanks for sharing that GORGEOUS stone with us!!! ![]() I have a couple of questions...isn't it true that the original vintage asschers are quite a bit deeper than modern ones? (I imagine that "massive crown" helps...) What are the table/depth percentages of that beauty? Do you happen to know cutting practices/priorities back in the twenties? I ask because I've always wondered if the stone I inherited (said to have been cut in the '20s) would have been cut differently had it been cut today. (It's an "asscheresque" diamond, teetering precariously close to the magic four carat number...3.91cts...71.6/61 depth/table.) And finally....what's the correct pronunciation? "asher" or "azure"?? Thanks! ![]() widget |

Re: The Elusive Vintage Asscher Cut Diamond
Hi Widget, The vintage Asschers (as well as the Royal Asschers) are quite a bit deeper than the Modern Asschers (whether Octogonal or Square Emerald). This particular vintage cut diamond is 70.2/54 - Depth/Table...very typical of this cut and very much in line with what you would expect the proportions to be. If your diamond was cut today would it have been different?...probably so. Advances in percision technology have changed just about everything. The correct pronounciation, at least according to Fabrikant, is 'Asher'. By the way, '3.91' sounds plenty magical.....

Ariel, What carat weight and clarity is your stone? It is so beautiful. Widget, every time you mention your asscher, I get goosebumps. It is one of my favorites I have ever seen. |
