That and another Jewish custom is quite nice: the yartzeit candle. On the anniversary of a loved one's death a candle is lit that burns for 24 hours. I think it's a good thing to incorporate favorite rituals and customs from groups not your own. |

A note on the museum aspect... My fiance's cousin got married at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum a couple years ago. Strange location, but it fit them so well...They're both goofy and fun-loving, and they wanted their guests to have a great time. Everyone said it was the best wedding they'd ever attended. People remember a wedding like that...Family members still rave to the bride about it, and she just laughs.. She told me they got the whole museum for $400, but everyone thought they must have spent close to $10,000! I say go for it! |

Hillstead Museum
Hi Bella- I just recently got engaged and we have been looking for a nice affordable place to have our ceremony and reception. I came across the Hillstead M. and your messages on the board. I was wondering if you could provide any insight with regard to the facilities as a whole, cost, catering and any other information you may have? I really appreciate it! |

Hi, Sorry I didn't see this sooner. We rented the grounds for half the day. Cost is $1500, includes a tax refundable $500 patrons membership. Tent is extra, they provide use of the museum, guest tours, chairs, and the option to have the event inside if it rains. For all day affairs it is in the thousands, if you have a tent you also have to pay for firemen to be available, and all events including ours requires a million dollar insurance policy since its a historical society building/museum. Our caterer is seperate and we also have her booked to cater an after reception at our home, tented, cajun style buffet-style. Casual. She will provide champagne and munchies at the museum and full courses at our house. That is costing us, with tent, barteneder, booze, servers, etc... around $7000. Everything we're using to decorate and building matterials for the deck, bar, etc... thats in addition since its part of our original plans for remodeling and updating. Lots of work and all but in the end we think its smart to incorporate some of the need to spend money on a wedding with having permanent features added to our home. |

By the way, where are you from? Must be in the area? If you need to know who to contact please let me know. Also, the Wadsworth Ath. is an option too. Some of the area delegated for weddings is availble now, and full use of the museum when its entirely renovated. |

That is a wedding canopy and is seen at weddings where observant Jews marry. If you like it, by all means do it! Who is going to tell you not to? There is a museum in D.C. called the National Building Museum. It is gorgeous and interesting. When we first walked into it and saw it, our thought was that it would make a FANTASTIC place for a wedding. Guess what? They do allow weddings and other private events to take place there! If you want to see the inside of this building, go to google and type in the name. It will take you to a site where you will see what I am talking about. It's like the inside of a HUGE villa, complete with HUGE columns and all! |
