Not sure if forum is dead - need help choosing!

All -

I was a regular reader of diamondtalk.com over a decade ago when I was educating myself on my first major diamond purchase - a beautiful 1.31 ct. E-IF GIA emerald cut stone that went into my wife's engagement.

Fast forward 10 years and it's anniversary time...

I've read up on GIA vs. EGL all over again, but the differences in price are pretty shocking. SO, to all of the experts out there, what would you do?

PAIR 1 (GIA): $9933
1.03 ct
ideal cut
I color
SI1
depth 60.5%
table 59
ex/ex polish/sym
med to med girdle
no culet
no flour
6.53x6.54x3.95

1.01 ct
ideal cut
I color
SI1
depth 60.0
table 58
ex/ex
thin to med
no culet
no flour
6.52x6.54x3.92

PAIR 2 (EGL - not sure which just yet, prob not USA): $10,288
1.01 ct
"super" ideal cut
F
VS1
depth 61.0
table 54
ex/ex
med
no culet
faint flour
6.50x6.47x3.96

1.00 ct
"super" ideal cut
F
VS1
depth 60.5
table 55
ex/ex
med-slightly thick
no culet
no flour

So, for about the same $$ I can go up 3 levels in color and 2 levels in clarity by forgoing the GIA cert. That leaves an awful lot of room for "soft" grading, doesn't it? Which pair would you choose?

Definitely stick with GIA or AGS graded diamonds.
The last EGL stones that I saw were way off and actually more expensive than accurately graded diamonds for the real grade that they were.

Hi unstbl,

Not sure if you ended up making your decision yet, but thought I'd ask if you could post the certificates of the diamonds in question?

Outside of that, you will be sure to get accurate grading from the GIA reports. EGL is just too inconsistent with their various labs located worldwide. Remember, there really isn't any such thing as a "fantastic" deal in the world of diamonds. If it seems too good to be true it probably is.

All the best.

I would go with the GIA.
